Advice needed...new boiler installation...

Hi there

Our boiler has just kicked the bucket...I did take out insurance december 2010 and have been paying it since then but Npower didn't come out to do the first service that they're supposed to do under the insurance policy saying they were very busy and they'd get round to us when they could.

That was wednesday just gone...he had to order a part which is now obselete and the whole boiler has to be replaced. Npower won't give me the £450 towards a new boiler like they say they would as according to them, the boiler wasn't serviceable on it's first service. They are refunding my insurance payments at least but they quoted me £2700 (apparently discounted from £3200 out of the goodness of their own hearts) for the following.

A Worcester Bosch combi boiler
thermostat
flushing out of radiators

Is it me or is this alot? EON are not installing in my area at the moment and BG are coming tomorrow to give me a quote.

Does anyone have any ideas/experience about how much these things cost and what you should get in the package. We have a 3 bed mid terrace ex council house. Need it doing it fairly quick as we have 2 children and I'm just happy it's summer time (kind of!!)

thanks in advance
Leila

Good afternoon: you need to get a second opinion from an independent RGI...parts declared 'obsolete' (I'm assuming 'no longer available') by the big boys are often sourced without trouble by sole traders. More advice available here.

Sounds more than a lot to me. If it's a straight replacement it should be £1500 at most, boiler no more than £1000 (including the installers mark-up and £500 for installation. BG are doing a £400 discount deal on replacing Worcester boilers so should be lower.
As Canucklehead said, I would not write off my boiler on the sayso of an energy company as they are always looking to make biggest bucks.
If you know what is wrong check out the online spares supplier or get a local heating engineer in.

    Hi Canucklehead

WELL...I have to say thanks for that, your post spurred me to find the manual to our boiler and so I have...and I put the part number into the net and guess what....it's available to buy for £132!!!!

The girl I need to talk to at Npower has gone for the weekend so will certainly be placing a call on monday morning!!!!!!

    Hi Caveat

Re my post above, I've found the part, so did talk to Npower but really need to talk to the one who was handling my file from the start....BG are still coming tomorrow so I'll hang on to their quote hoping it's a lower one and also my child's schoolteachers dad is a boilerman so will get an independent quote from him too!

I knew MSE was good!! :o))

    thankyou !
