computer background chattering

I have just built a computer the computer has started to operate as though another program is running in the back ground and the red hard drive light is flashing the computer works OK but it is annoying when you constantly hear this background noise i have tried the computer with the downloads swiched off and switched off the indexing but it is still the same

the computer data is
Asus Motherboard M4N68T-M LE V2
Processor AMD Sempron 140
Wiodows xp operating system
Office 2007
IE 7

any help would be appreciated
