Surname change following wedding in Mexico Natwest bank

Hi.
We have just been married in Mexico and my wife will be taking my surname. What is the process for changing it with the bank (natwest) and our wedding certificate is in spanish, wil this still be acceptable?

I wouldn't expect there to be a problem. My wedding certificate was in Spanish and I don't recall ever needing to have it translated.

If in doubt, she could just get a new passport or driving licence in her new name and then use that as ID.

Firstly, Congratulations!

Should be fine. However one thing I'd like to mention that may not be relevant to you, but maybe for others.

Two yet to be married friends of mine were house hunting. They'd gone through the paperwork so they knew they were pre-approved for a certain level of mortgage so they could target their house-hunting based on this.

They were in no hurry, initially renting then living in the family home with her mum for a bit to save those pennies.

They got married in Italy. Honeymoon followed as is does...wonderful time had. Perfect.

Back to reality: house hunting...

They found somewhere they were keen to put an offer on, and here's where things snagged big time. She'd changed her surname (shocker!) It wasn't the name she'd signed with her now husband on the application forms. You've got to go through the approval process again, said the lender! Damn!

Needless to say this stopped their house purchase in it's tracks!

I'm not sure how common this is, it happened a couple of years ago now, but something to at least be aware of. I'd say it's not uncommon for house hunting & impending mariage to go hand-in-hand...

i got married in cuba, took my spanish wedding cert to Halifax and they said i had to have a translation.

Got this done froma company thomas cook recommended (i arranged the wedding through them) cost about £130 then i changed everything across, as far as i know you have to do the same for driving licence etc.

Most banks have a translation service for incidents like this - it might delay the change of surname but not for long.

No need for a wedding certificate really. Just a written declaration in English that the former family name is not going to be used again and that the person now is known as whatever the new surname is.

However if the mortgage has been approved for a woman using one surname and they have married, the woman could still use her original name. The surname does not automatically change on marriage, it's a decision to change (or not).
