iPod Touch advice

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch for various reasons. My son loves playing Angry Birds on my dads iPhone and although I have it on my x10, I don't want him breaking my phone. I also have a lot of music but it's on a 6 year old iPod classic which is quite bulky. I don't need a lot of storage *I think* but my current iPod shows the following: Capacity 55GB, available 40GB. I'm sure I can strip out a lot of music I don't need and maybe get away with an 8GB model but how much space do apps take up? Basically I need one for music with a few apps thrown in.

So a couple of questions:

Is there any reason why a 3rd Gen version would be a bad idea?
How much should I expect to pay for a 3rd Gen?
I've had a look at Wikipedia and I'm confused at to what generations have what storage. Could anyone confirm what giveaways there are between generations?

There are some on eBay and some on studentcomputers.co.uk but I'm not sure which is the best overall for cost & reliability (i.e. not getting ripped off!).

3rd gen has 32GB and 64GB, 4th gen has 8GB, 32GB and 64GB

4th gen has the retina display, and front and rear cameras, and is a bit smoother and more future-proof than the 3rd gen
3rd gen is bog-standard 320 * 480.

3rd gen you're looking to pay £100-£150 depending on storage
4th gen around £120 - £200 depending on storage

You could probably get away with 2GB for apps, as most decent apps are around 20MB - 200MB. Some games like FIFA will stretch to 1GB.

I would go for an 8GB 4th gen if I was looking.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'll keep an eye on eBay and see if I can beat the prices you've listed and see if I can convince myself to get a 4th Gen :cool:

If you could, get a 32gb. Although it's my iPhone, practically the same principle, I wish I hadn't gone for an 8gb as I filled it up a lot quicker than I had expected. That's just my opinion. Definitely the 4th Gen though, it's much better. HTH.

He's not even 2 years old and the fun comes from being able to turn the phone on, swipe the unlock thingy, swipe screens until he finds Angry Birds then flings the birds - sometimes in the right direction. We've all lost our phones to Angry Birds without losing my laptop as well but thank you very much for your post :beer:

Won't an Android smartphone outperform an iPod Touch at the same price? Remove the SIM, connect to WiFi, you have it sorted. Plays Flash content too, unlike small iDevices.

With any small portable WiFi device, you have the conundrum of exercising Parental Control on it though.
