Hi,Discharged about a month ago and had a Barclays basic account through BR.
Just wondering if anyone has upgraded their account so soon after BR?.

You will be able to get online banking now you are discharged, but the chance of getting a normal account with a cheque book is slim to none.:pB&SC No. 298

Agree with Dojoman - very slim indeed!
You would need to have a very good profile with Barclays (i.e. very high income going into account or a high savings balance) to stand any chance - but even then they still use credit scoring and it would most likely be declined0 -
I was discharged on 7/6/2011 and took a screen copy of my discharge from the Insolvency Service to my Barclays branch yesterday and they were fine with it - they will send it off to their bankruptcy team via the post to update. They told me that I should get confirmation in about a week or so then can setup.
Just got to wait, all I want to do is check my account online instead of going to the Barclays cashpoint every other day to check my mini statements......0 -
Practically no chance of upgrading with Barclays. One of my relatives is Branch Manager. They use the credit scoring system, you would need a massive income and a high amount of savings to even have a slim chance. Possibly online banking, but forget about the cheque book, especially as cheque guarantee cards are being phased out. Sorry

Once discharged you can definitely get the on line banking facility back.:pB&SC No. 298

I was so relieved when i got my online banking back as i rarely go ito town......as for the cheque book...would they even give you one if you could have one.....i mean considering cheques are being phased out?????0

People keep saying cheques are being phased out, but there is still a need for cheques. You can send a cheque by post to a loved on, safer than cash and cheaper than a postal order. A lot of small businesses don't have card facilities but will still accept cheques as well as cash.
I peronsally think cheques will be around for a while yet.
So yes, if the bank did give cheque books to BRs then they would be issued as they have not been phased out yet. The problem is they don't want us to have a cheque book as we are then at risk of running up debt again! When I joined, I needed a name. The forum members gave one to me...I am INAN

If the banks hand out cheque books to us, they might as well give us overdrafts. The problem with cheques is that they are a form of credit and we are not worthy.0

I personally don`t need a cheque book but can see the reason why some people still do. How long they will be around for is anyones guess. Any money I send to a love now is done by electronic bank transfer, quicker and safer than a cheque.:pB&SC No. 298

A lot of small businesses will soon need to change their customer payment methods...like it or not, cheques will be gone soon....administratively they are costly for a bank....I can recall having to pay bank charges on cheques presented...albeit many years ago.
Now small traders will have to enter the minefield of credit cards, debit cards..and the myriad of charges the companies demand...which inevitably will have to be passed onto us, the customer.
However, it is still legal...to write out a cheque on the side of a cow...
[it does not have to be on the banks' own cheques...as long as the relevant details are included, it can be written on anything.....No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
