    Genuine Question: Why?

I bought a cheap Garmin satnav for my daughter (earlier in this forum) and I really couldn't fault it.
(Sadly my daughter's car got busted into last month and Satnav stolen - on the one day she didn't remove it from the screen!!!

I remember the plonker in Comet trying to persuade me to go for a (much) higher priced model.

Me: What more does it do?
Sales: It searches by 7 fig postcodes not just 5 fig
Me: Oh, you mean it will take me to 79 Acacia Ave instead of 25 Acacia Ave, big deal!
    Sales: It will play mp3s
Me: I have a CD-mp3 player with SD and USB slots already fitted in my car.
Sales: We don't have it in stock
Me: I'll buy the display model
Sales: I'll check with manager . . . OK we'll do it at £10 off.

So I got it fully boxed, with all contents intact for £89 instead of £99.

Was excellent on performance, accurate and with all the functions of a satnav system.

Please tell me what more a Tom Tom does that I'm desperately missing, for all that extra money?
The bankers stole my pension (and everyone else's). It should have earned a lot of money, but they took their bonus pot first.

Perhaps I should buy both? I'm a bit wary about having anything of high value in a car, too many breakins over the years. Wll either satnav be cheaper on boxing day?

What numbers will win the lottery tonight?:D

I wish I could see into the future.

Basically, customer support, build quality and third party extras etc.

My experience with their support was amazing, and I have found (in my experience) that anything done "to a price" has to have weak points (usually, build quality).

Also (although this may not be relevant) the resale value will be a lot higher ;)

Just bought a Navman F20 fro £139. The whole presentation and quality is far superior to my Tomtom One. My experience of Tomtom Customer service is poor and upgrades are expensive. Looking at the spec of the Medion it ticks all the boxes and at half the price of the Tomtom is a bargain.
  • Medion's customer service is far better than Tomtom's in my experience. As tomtom also uses the poor teleatlas based maps, you'll be sent down one way streets the wrong way, over cliffs, etc.
Look for a gps unit that uses Navteq based maps, if you drive in Ireland or Scotland or in any sparsely populated area, then Navteq maps are necessary - Tomtom still hasn't got several roads that Navteq has had since 2003. The only advantage tomtom has over the competition is a bigger advertising budget and a large user base from pirate copies of the pda based versions.

I've reserved bought the Medion, I'll buy another Satnav for the lust of my life. Another Medion or the Navsure?
