If you are considering total cost then spending 8 grand on a car that is going to end up being worth massively less is in my view pointless. Better to spend in the region of £2k and get something older and you will save a fortune even if you put a few quid aside just in case something goes wrong.

and quite possibly a recipe for a bad back
sometimes you have to spend a little to gain a lot
i used to do a round trip of 80 miles a day in a worn out cortina so i envy the fool ,well actually i dont but i watched mr t on the box tonight:D

  • I would suggest a Honda Civic Diesel, which should easily give you around 60 mpg for your commute. Very comfortable and reliable, in my experience. Checking Autotrader, there are quite a few with less than 40,000 miles on the clock and less than five years old, that are well within your price range.

I have a 2003 1.7 diesel model, which I use for an eighty mile round-trip commute daily, plus a fair bit of other business mileage on top. I only bought in February but so far, it's the best car that I've ever had.
