Just a side note, do log into your PayPal but not with that link.

Two weekends ago i bought some small wedding stencils.. 1.98, all went well i won the bid and paid immediately via pay pal..

A few hours later i received an email from PayPal telling me my account was suspended until i updated.. so i logged on but not via the link and found it was suspended, I thought it was because i don't use it often.

Did the changing of passwords and all it asked and thought nothing of it..

few days ago i notice i had a refund in my bank account for the amount i spent on eBay, but i had just received the goods, i quickly emailed the person i bought them from to tell them,

they got back to me and told me PayPal had given her the money back too as they suspected i was not a genuine customer..

i offered a postal order instead, she said not to worry she had been given her money back... (yet i had the stencils and money back too)

today email from PayPal saying again my account was suspended, so this time i called them, good job too, someone in china was trying to log into my PayPal account. This is why they suspended it.

They were really nice and i appreciate what they did and why, frustrating yes but it could of saved hassle, as although PayPal would give you your money back they don't pay for any bank charges you may incur because of it.

Spam emails from banks and paypal telling you that theres an urgent message, account suspended, you owe money, or to re-register/re-activate, are the most common, so bin them. If it sounds like rubbish or something is just not right, then it usually is. If you are not sure, then you are best to bin it or transfer it to your spam folder. If its from an important company you deal with, eg from your bank, then go to the banks own website and log in to find out if it was a genuine message, or contact the bank via email about it if you really must. Find your bank by doing it yourself (from your bookmarks or via search engine), and never click on any addresses/links within any emails! If they are spam then they will most likely (as an example) lead you to a rogue website that looks identical to your bank, where you will log in, giving the scammers all your details as a result, so that they can try and grab some quick cash in the process. Once you start getting junkmail/spam, it tends to build up after a while until eventually you may wish to change to a new email address and start over. I get loads of junk in my yahoo email, so its time for me to give it up and use another :) but changing all the email information on all those sites you signed up with in the past is a slow and awkward process :( If all is well and you havent received any private messages to re-activate (after logging into the real paypal website in your case) then simply dont worry about it, it was just junkmail.
  • Its worth remembering that Paypal will ALWAYS start a genuine email with your name, they will never address it to sir/madam or just nothing.

I just got one claiming to be from "PayPal[no-reply@paypal.com]'. It was headed "Regarding your PayPal account: xyz.abc@qwqwq.com" and started "Hello xyz.abc" (i.e my name in lower case separated by a dot). It was telling me my account had been limited and asked me to fill in the attached form. Clicking on the attached form opened what looked liked a paypal screen asking for verification details (car no, security code etc). Clicking on all the menus displayed "your account has been limited".

At first glance, it looked real but the attached form was a PDF (not a link) and clicking either of the "save" or "cancel" buttons at the bottom would have sent the details to the scammer.

I've had a "reactivate your account" from about every bank and building society in the UK and quite a few from abroad. I don't even bother reading them now, they just get dumped. My bank and B.Soc won't ever contact me about my accounts by email so I'm safe to do this.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
