stopping economy 7

I have just rung SP about coming off economy 7 as we no longer have storage heaters and we're not using a big enough percentage of electricity overnight to make it worthwhile. Thay have quoted me £54 ! Thay say it's because I need to have a new meter put it. Is this correct? I thought they could just use the combined day and night kWh used - surely it's only a matter of adding up the figures? Thankyou

I think it's correct but I'm wondering why they're charging?0

It's the charge I am bothered about! They said they couldn't waive it even when I said I may look at another supplier, but gave me the no. of the metering company to see if they would change it.0

Just rung the no. and they say that the request has to come from Scottish power...aargh.0

I have an Economy 7 meter(with two readings) but have not had an Economy 7 tariff for years.
Both BG and EON have simply added the two totals and treated it as one total e.g. 2,000kWh on one meter and 300kWh on the off-peak is treated as 2,300kWh on a normal tariff.
My understanding is that some companies' computer accounting systems are not programed to handle this situation.0 -
Some energy co's will combine E7 readings, some won't. If they won't, it's a very reasonable charge to change it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

change company and tarrif - i moved to edf from eon and they removed the E7 meter for me as well.0

Yes it's correct, with SP you need a new meter for a single rate tariff and SP will charge you for such a change.
(Only some suppliers will agree to supply a single rate tariff when you have a dual rate meter - something to remember should you switch to such a supplier and later want to switch again to one that doesn't allow it)
Although I thought SP charged £45 for a new meter (but maybe that's gone up by 10%-19% too )"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi mordent smiley,
We do charge for a meter change in these circumstances, so what you have been advised so far is correct.
You could opt to keep your current e7 meter but we would continue to bill you on e7 prices. It is possible that this may not be any more costly for you if you use a fair amount of electricity during the times when you are charged less.
If you would like some more specific advice on this you can e-mail me at onlinecomplaints@scottishpower.com
