How to find my nan!

I posted before about my slightly dysfunctional family on my dads side - to cut a long story short they want nothing to do with my dad which resulted in a cut of all contact to us too....

I personally think the whole thing has gone on way too long (10years +) and would actually like to get into contact with my Nan.
As her eldest granchild I would actually like her to know Im graduating soon etc and maybe even send her my graduation photo :o
Im not interested in all the rubbish between her and my dad, I want to have a relationship with her soley on my merit - I don't live at home anymore so of the opinion she maybe might be more inclined to get in touch with me?

I did a brief search online and didn't really pull up any results - I literally only know her first name and married surname and the rough area she lived 10+ years ago. A search on 192.com pulled up 1 result for the name (fairly unusual) and suggests it was last registered on the electoral roll in 2002 - so of course I really don't know if she lives there anymore and have to pay to find out the exact address......

My nan would be into her 80's now so its possible she could be in a care home or anything, I've no idea.

Can anyone help with any free ways of tracing her or any other ideas?

Thanks

I don't really have any practical advice, apart from that I know a few people who have found "lost" relatives on facebook. Perhaps try to get names of any (younger) family members and google them?

Good luck finding your nan. I hope she is nice to you if you do find her! Has she at least made some effort before to stay in touch with you, sent birthday cards etc, anything that showed some sort of effort? If she hasn't bothered staying in touch with her grandkids at all, not even sent birthday/christmas cards due to a dispute with her son it would make me wonder if she is a nice woman. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think you are doing a good thing by getting in touch, and that is lovely that you want to build bridges with your family, and that I hope they are nice to you in return :-)

Firstly, are you sure that your nan is still alive?

    Secondly, try www.pipl.com

one option would be to go to the Council area where she used to live and check the more recent electorla rolls for the old address (since 2003, people can tick a box to prevent thier details being published). These are usually in the family history or library archive.

Unfortunatly the whole of my dads side is a bit messed up shall we say and none of them speak, infact several of them are totally AWOL.
Did try Facebook but no luck.

In regards to the birthday cards etc then no - nothing. That stopped many years back but I suppose in all fairness to my nan my parents never even gave her thier new address when they moved 8years ago so she couldn't send them anyway.

I *think* shes still alive of course have no way of knowing for sure but Id like to think her sister would have been in touch with us if she had died - didnt really speak much to my family but she was given our phone number and she has rung a few times over the years to talk to my parents.

Her local council is about 150 miles from me so at the moment thats not really an option...

Its actually so frustrating because I can remember almost exactly what her bungalow looked like etc and really roughly where it is but googling the name of the road that comes to mind doesnt seem to exist.
Its worth a shot in asking if anyone knows of a Bungalow housing estate *nearish* to a B&Q in Hedge end? Looking on the map none of the road names ring any bells.
Of course no help if she no longer lives there

It might be she's still there but has opted out of the electoral register for marketing which means she woulnd't show on 192.com

Is her age correct in 192.com?

If she died before 2006, you can look up deaths.

PM me if you want deaths looked up. I'll need her full name and year (or date) of birth.

I can't seem to see her age on 192.com, doesnt seem to want to tell me it - I assume I have to pay to see that?

I litterally have no idea on the year of birth or anything but my dad's 50 so I would put her around 80ish....

Did do a very quick death register search myself but the only ones that come up for her exact name are pre 1997 and she was definetly alive after that as she came to my other nans funeral in 2000.

  • Could you use street view to 'look around' the area as you have a vague idea of an address. You might recognise somewhere or something. Good luck .

I found my Mum's father through genes reunited, I searched his name and found a few family trees, I carefully contacted the owners, two got back to me, But only one I replied too, It was My mum's step brother who she never met. Sadly her father passed away few years prior. Hope this helps.

Is Hedge End in Southampton? Try putting her name in the Search Box, top right for her local newspaper here . You get more results using the general search box, top right than the family notices search box. It does seem to go back about 10 years. Try putting in other family names too if they are local.
