We have two Cavaliers, one very elderly, one prone to putting weight on (very greedy).

Our greedy girl was adopted as a 2 year-old, and had always been fed on Hills science plan. We tried other brands, but these gave her appalling wind (REALLY stinky!!), so we settled back to Hills, but the light version, and they both have that.

BUT Hills is very expensive, and we're looking to make all sorts of cut backs now. So has anyone got any suggestions for a good quality alternative we can try ....
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

it may well be but you use so little of it it works out very cheap .

I have a cocker. I buy a 15kg bag for about £35 and it lasts him near on four months - 100 days at the very least. Works out at 35p a day

I spent a long time looking for good quality dog food at a reasonable price - they've all gone up so much recently - finally found CSJ dog food (easy to find when search online).

They do a range of foods from basic to premium (£10 to £35 for 15kg), also special diets and herbal suplements. I buy 1 bag of premium and 1 cheaper and mix them together, which means I can feed my dog for less than £25 per month - he's a big dog so eats 15kg a month - I can't find any other decent food for that price.

Their delivery is a bit pricey - £6.85 (will deliver 2 bags for that), but do have stockists around the country.
  • Mr B is wheat intolerant and gets a mixture of Skinners Duck & Rice http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/products/field---trial-products/duck---rice/ - very good quality & VAT free which is why it's a bit cheaper (£22 from pet shop, can buy a bit cheaper online) and Wainwrights Large Breed Mature http://www.petsathome.com/shop/dog/dog-food-treats/dry-dog-food/ - both 15kg bags and you'd obviously not need the large breed one (link to the various "flavours").

I've just been onto the PAH site and the Wainwrights are on offer (typical I've just bought some .....) - BOGO1/2price on the 15kg and 3 for 2 on the smaller bags - might be worth a try!

Off to order some myself now and stock up while it's on offer!!!!!!

Research suggests that carbohydrates (grains) cause weight gain in susceptible dogs, also dry foods are also very calorie-dense so make portion control and satiety difficult. Assuming you switched to an alternative brand of dry food slowly, it may be that your dog does not digest grains well (intolerant). Why not switch to a reasonably priced wet diet that is high in animal protein such as Chappie?
