fiesta mk6 - high revs on startup??

recently when starting up my fiesta (1.4 zetec petrol) 53 plate with 80k miles done it seems to rev a lot higher than it use but seems to settle back to normal after a short time. It idles okay when warm and only seems rev a lot higher on startup not sure if this could be ECU relataed or anything to worry about?

Define "a lot higher". What is it idling at when cold?

This is normal cold start behaviour - you may find blipping the accelerator reduces the higher revs.

As said previously, it is normal for some cars to idle a little higher to compensate for cold starts e.t.c.

My old VW Polo used to idle at 1,150rpm for about 3-4 mins 'til it settled to 9,00 rpm.

If its something like this then nothing to worry about - its normal!

it only concerned me because it has only just started doing it jumped to about 2000-2500 RPM on startup from cold but soon reduced to normal tickover. will keep my eye on it

It shouldn't rev that high though - so can see you concern. Keep an eye on it.

greggp get a garage to look at it
it might be as simple as an idle speed control valve sticking
but if its gunning from cold its going to damage the bearings in the crank fairly soon
