Filliing in a serving hatch, anything to consider.

Hi
I'd like to fill in a serving hatch connecting the dining room and kitchen. I have been told it may effect the kitchen as it will now be an enclosed room with no radiator. Will it make a difference.
Secondly, any tips. Bricks and plasterboard, or would it be better to have a sliding door. Its never used btw.

we had the serving hatch between the kitchen and the rear living room blocked up last year before reconfiguring the kitchen. The walls are blockwork so it was filled in with blocks and then plastered. youd never know it had ever been there now when you look at it. We dont have a rad in the kitchen and its caused no problems. the heat from the oven and hob keeps it warm enough.0

Blocking the hole up will make no difference to the warmth of the kitchen. Many kitchens have no heating, mine included.
In terms of cost effectiveness, a simple timber frame with a piece of plasterboard either side skimmed over is probably as cheap as its gets.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
And what about condensation. I have been told you have to have an extractor fan, is that true.0

I filled mine in with bricks and then plastered it. Possibly it would have been easier to use wood and plaster board.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
DD just bought a house with a serving hatch, it went along with the wall it was in as the kitchen was too small, a new stud wall a couple of feet further into the living room has made all the difference.0

How about filling it in a decorative way, say with glass blocks so more light passes both ways?European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0

Or use the method I refer to as the shawshank method and just stick a huge poster of a raquel welch over the big hole. Total cost just under a fiver including the bluetac.
Use chewing gum instead of blutac for even better price.0 -

Why not just put glass there? It would let light through.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.
