I think hecate really needs the benefit of MS advice and more sympathy should be shown here.

In October 2005 he/she was using a Hair Group promotions voucher for his/her monthly visit to a salon.

In January 2006 he/she had cancer but worked in a heavy, manual, outdoor job to pay his/her mortgage and bring up teenage kids.

Also in January, he/she had a 19 yr old student daughter insured with Tesco for driving a Vauxhall Corsa.

By July 2006 the cancer was ongoing, but he/she had been receiving benefits since May, walked 19 miles each way for treatment; been burgled and all valuables taken....but did realise that posting sounded like some "unbelievable sob story".

By 1st November 2006, he/she was a student applying for a loan - even got his/her MP involved in the application.

Finally, 44 days after the previous post, the student loan has been spent on accommodation and books, been burgled (again), walking 10 miles each way to lectures, has no immediate family (despite mentioning his London-based mother in July 2006) and hasn't eaten for 5 days!

    It's a hard li(f)e!

i think the loan is enough to live on if you live frugally and are not adverse to being adventurous in the kitchen. (also i think the price of accommodation in your uni area is a big factor) Im in my 4th and final year and I get by on the maximum loan, i receive no financial help from family and i manage ok - just cant go out all the time, or buy everything in the world i want - but i live a good lifestyle and have fun - i use my loan, overdraft and for occasional emergencies my credit card - when i need to get some money together i sell something on ebay or do some mystery shopping assignments. i have chosen not to work in my final year because i want to concentrate on my work, but i worked in my previous 3 years and it paid for everything i needed. i looked at the loan as a big help but didnt rely on it. uni should be a place to learn the only person you should expect to rely in is yourself so you need to learn to look after yourself - even if it does mean you can't sleep in and watch neighbours or get home in time for the simpsons lol. xxx

aint that the the main reason for uni? Yes to get a qualification but to also be more independant and have a taste of the real world? which also includles budgeting
  • People can be so rude  What is preposterous about this story

What is wrong with taking advantage of an offer to get free haircuts and colouring, saving herself £35-£40 monthly?

    Maybe, just maybe if the OP had stated that she was a mum with teenage kids recently diagnosed with cancer -decides to do the study she had put off, due to her being faced with her own mortality, and to have some extra money coming in because she had to give up her part time job, and unfortunately got burgled twice - March 2006 & Nov 2006, maybe, just maybe, she would have gotten more sympathy rather than snide comments such as;

    Learn to budget wisely
Don't spend it all on clothes and trainers
    Plan well next time
You would be dead if you don't eat in 5 days (it's 28 days average BTW)
I used to live in a cardboard box
    You can afford internet connection
You go to uni to help you learn to deal with the real world . . .

And before anyone has a moan about people dredging up old posts, the forum Moderator could lock a thread if they wish for people not to post in it further.

  • Mate, if you haven't had food in a week and you've got nothing to buy any with its time to get down to the local community day-centre and get a free meal. The one I worked with at london bridge don't mind if you're homeless / a business man so go and get something to eat - I'm sure theres one where you are. Then get a job! x

Oh please what  It is clearly obvious people answered the OP based on the assumption that they thought he/she was an eighteen year old student, so pray care to tell what is freaking wrong with being a young student on the next learning curve in life? Shakes head, hisses and walks away

    Nothing at all!

Not sure I feel the same about idiots who come onto forums and post carp, in a bid to waste others time and take the p1$$ though!

Still, if you are into encouraging that kind of behaviour...
  • Still I believe we are not in a position to judge unless we hsve first-hand information. All she did was ask for help in finding out what she could be entitled to. No need to kick people whilst they are down.

And as long as internet trolls are concerned, there is always the report to Moderator or ignore button or . . .

This (very old) post was dragged up just to moan about the comments!

Now why would someone do that?
