My son recently had his hot water tank complete with 2 immersion heaters in it replaced.

For the past year he has been using kettles to heat water or using cold water as he lives alone.

Showering at his work.

He is leaving the economy 7 immersion on all night, no timer, and is manageing to not need to put the booster immersion on.

He has been reading his meter every day and the immersion is using 5 kWhs of electricity a night

Is this about right for a tank full of hot water?

Depending on the tank size, but for a typical 3.5 foot high tank that may be a little high.

In my experience such a tank heats up in about 1 hour (assuming the water is still a little warm from previously). An immersion heater would use 3kW per hour. That would mean he is using 2 kWh just maintaining the water at the desired temperature for the remaining 6 hours.

But if it's a bigger tank (as is sometimes the case with E7) then that's about right. Alternatively at about 5p per unit, it's only about 10p per day overspend anyway.
