Refund on flying lessons

Hey All,
Way back in 2006 i started to take some flying lessons at a local club. To save money i took advantage of a deal they used to offer to purchase lessons up front. Due to work comitments i took a break for a few years leaving the credit on the book.
When i returned to the school i found that they had changed owners but still operating under the same legal entity. When i queried my balance they said that they were in dispute with the previous owners hence i am only entitled to 50% of the previous balance.
As a compromise i said i would take 75% if it was a refund rather than hours but they insist that i can only take 50% and it has to be as the hours. In my opinion this is robbery, i put 100% in and should get 100% out they shouldnt be able to "steal" the 50% just because they have an issue with someone else.
Where do i stand legally and how can i go about recovering the money? I dont want to charge in there with a small claims case without knowing legally where i stand.
From what i can make out there are others in the same situation.
Can anyone offer any advice or direction?
Thanks in advance
Reg
