Changing name on passport

Can someone settle an arguement that my H2B and I are having!:o

Is it a legal requirement you MUST change your passport to your married name?

And

Do you have to buy a whole new passport or just pay a nominal fee to change your name?

1) NO! But you do need to make sure bookings for flights are made in the same name that is on your passport.

2) IRRC The fee is the same whichever you do, as you are getting a new passport regardless.

No because you might not be changing your name to your married name full stop. As long as flights are in the name your passport is in you are ok.

There is no 'nominal' fee, it's a new passport. you don't get the passport you have with your new name in back.

Agree with above- check out direct.gov website for all that info. Is worth saying though that your driving license & insurance & dvla stuff has to be registered at the same address (legally- I know it doesn't always happen), so they may need to be in the same name but don't know. Just a thought.

If you want to use your married for your honeymoon but haven't yet got married how do you go about booking a honeymoon in your married name?

Im not sure you can do that unless you have a passport (persume you are going abroad?) in your married name? AFAIK you can only get that if you have a marriage license to prove your new name or if you have changed to your married name by deed poll and have this as proof to get the passport <does that make sense?!> I know what I mean but I dont think I have explained it very well *blush*

You just book it in your married name. When booking a holiday you don't have to provide details of your identity etc. Then speak to the vicar or registry office and obtain a letter stating you are due to get married on such and such a date. Apply for a new passport in your married name with this letter. The passport won't 'start' until the date of your wedding day.

My new married name passport arrived yesterday.

You can book your honeymoon in whatever name you want. I booked our honeymoon in my married name back in February. You just have to make sure that when you travel your booking is the same name as your passport.

To change your name in your passport before your wedding you need to get the form from the postoffice or download it from the direct.gov website. You complete part of it and then the vicar or registrar completes the other part saying that they confirm you are booked in for a wedding on such-and-such a date. You then complete the regular passport application in your married name. (which is weird! especially when you have to sign your new name!)

When your new passport arrives you need to remember that it isnt valid for travel until the day of your wedding, so you wont be able to go travel with it before then.

It costs the full fee to change your name regardless of how long you have left on your old passport. I used check and send facility at the postoffice and new passport arrived on the doormat exactly 2 weeks after.

Be aware that if you have had a previous name change it may not be so straight forward changing your name again due to the more stringent checks they are now carrying out. My sister in law had her application deferred as it was the 2nd name change she had had due to marriage and the passport office wanted to do a face to face interview. She had to cancel the honeymoon abroad as they couldnt do the appointment in time for them to go away. If this may be the case with you then allow plenty of time when you're applying. You can apply up to 3 months before your wedding.

Hey Scotsbirde - as I said before - you must make the bookings in the same name as is on your passport or you wont be allowed to fly.

You can apply for a passport in your married name upto 3 months before the wedding (I have done this as my old passport expired the week after our wedding). I had to get the registrar to sign a form to send with my application.
As 74jax says, the new passport will become valid on the day you get married.
