  • Our son is very diligent and has already started the application process for his student loan.

We are concerned with debt, but are taking MSE advice to go with the loan, and save money separately for him.

However the student loan site requires bank account details.
And he can't get a student bank account until he is 18.
By which time (August 2015) he may be too late to get his loan in time for term.

We intend to go visit Santander and see if they are flexible.

Anyone else had this problem - any good suggestions?

    Thanks, RA

If they won't allow your son to open a student account before a certain time then get them to open a Santander Everyday Current Account and then upgrade it when he is eligible for a student account. That way, the sort and account number remains the same which can be provided to Student Finance.
  • My daughter has won a scholarship to USA but it doesnt cover all costs - she is not eligible for UK student finance loan if studying abroad. It equates to approx £9000 a year - any suggestions?

I am told, but can not be sure.
There are "100's" of small charity's in the USA that provide small grants to all sorts of people and it is only a matter of researching to find them and applying.
This was from a distant young relative living in the USA who claimed he had been given 100's and 100's of dollars.
    Worth a try.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
  • My daughter is studying abroad and will get her University degree before moving back to the UK to study for her Masters. Can she still apply for a student loan to pay for her education? She has never had a student loan and I live and work in the UK.

Anybody know if this is possible and how to go about it?

    Thanks

I am hoping for some advice here.

Our daughter is 20 and has been accepted to go to Kings College London to do nursing in Sep 2015 by which time she will be 21. Both me and her Dad have full time jobs - I work for the NHS and he is in the RAF.

Her offer from Kings includes the fees for Halls and it's basically twice as much as our mortgage - about £800 a month and nursing is a longer academic year than most courses so she would have to pay this for about 10 months we estimate.

There are no fees for nursing so she can only apply for a cost of living loan and that, combined with the NHS Bursary, totals about £6K a year. Not even enough to cover her rent, let alone eat and travel.

It seems almost impossible that anyone could do a degree in London. How is anyone able to afford it? We would have to pay her rent which we just can't afford to do. By the time she hits her third year, we would have her brother at university too. We can't afford to fill in the extra required.

    Any suggestions, gratefully accepted.
  • Everyone be warned that the student loan you get from the government will be sold off to a loan shark.
Then MSEs advice to get one won't look so smart when you have been dragged into a game of lies, deceit and intimidation!

I'm sorry I can't offer any help - there is an article here saying similar things

Kings have halls from £136 a week, so she would be able to cover her rent from the bursary/loan

Or just live further out and commute in.

Most students nurses i know, do bank work at the hospital to make a bit of extra money

The other option is to train at a hospital outside london, where cost of living is supposedly cheaper. However my DD is at a small uni, in a cheap part of the country and she still paid £130/wk for halls
