Someone in debt gets a new credit card with a better rate, transfers the old credit card debt to the new one, and thus reduces their costs in servicing the debt. That to me sounds like money saving.

I'm glad you put a question mark after that because it's certainly a questionable statement. I think that the MSE message to students is very clear, that debt outside the student loan is a bad thing. I also doubt that very many students have mortgages either.

Moneysupermarket.com however do have a guide to student credit cards

And ML holds £50 million squids worth of shares/share options in moneysupermarket.com so - really????? Questionable????

How to take out your first loan

Most of us find ourselves strapped for cash as a student or when we start our first job.

So if you need to take out a loan to make ends meet, you'll want to know how to do this, and make sure to pick the most suitable one for you at the best rate.

Here, we look at how to take out your first loan.

I'll take your word for it.

Having never used Moneysupermarket (or anything on MSE apart from the forums;)) I forget that others may do both.

However, when I worked in IAG, my advice on student loans would have been much the same as on here and I certainly didn't have an axe to grind.

Or it's just a con (consumers racked up £7.8bn in credit card debt last month alone) to get people into even more debt? As I posted before, it's a bit like giving an alcoholic his first drink for free in a bar...

...truly - the time-honored tradition for shopaholics: at that point when they finally realize that their spending has spiraled out of control, was to cut up your credit card. In the long term such an action will save you money.

    Sage advice don't you think?

(But maybe, it's not the sort of advice that makes money gurus money?)

[QUOTE=GeneHunt;62152361 cut up your credit card[/QUOTE]

Cut up your credit card and do not sin again is the old style advice my folks would have given too...

    Sage advice indeed.

A man in debt is so far a slave.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

    or
Debt, n. An ingenious substitute for the chain and whip of the slavedriver.
    Ambrose Bierce

    or
Debt is the slavery of the free.
    Publilius Syrus

    or
Rather go to bed supperless than rise in debt.
    Benjamin Franklin

    or

    Credit card interest costs

Those with decent credit histories can now, for a small fee, ‘balance transfer’ debts. This is where you shift them to a new card at a much cheaper rate, so you pay 0% for well over two years. Typically on a £3,000 debt that’s £500 saved. For the latest best buys you can check out the website www.moneysavingexpert.com/bts .
