  • Hi,
My son is hoping to go to Edinburgh or Glasgow this september to study, we live in Cheshire.
Both courses are 4 years long, please can you clarify for me - will he have to repay his loan once he starts earning £15,575 or £21,000..?
Having read Item 17 of your Student Loans Mythbusting feature I am now a bit worried he will end up borrowing more and repaying considerably more than if he goes to an English uni...
    Please advise, many thanks

Hi all. I have a question about loans that I have been deffering for a long time. I have never really been a position to repay until now for reasons I won't go into but suffice to say these are loans going back to the mid-90s.

I am just starting to get back on my feet financially and have a secured a job that comes with a car user allowance. Without the allowance my salary is way off the thresholds but with the allowance it comes very close and a small pay-rise would push it over. Are car allowances counted when they are calculating how close to the thresholds you are? The allowance is an absolute necessity for the job with nationwide travel.

His repayments will start when he earns over £21,000 and he will owe 33% more if he chooses to do a 4 year degree compared to a 3 year.

#396 They are more likely to go to the wall OVERCHARGING. Students will either stop going to uni or go elsewhere.

Unis need to start thinking outside the box. £9k pa is way too much!

Fees backlash leads to sharp decline in student numbers
The number of students admitted to British universities last autumn plummeted by as much as 40 per cent amid a huge backlash over rising tuition fees, it has emerged.

£9000 pa was just too much!
  • “It might be that students don’t understand the new loans repayment system and are being put off by the large ‘debt’. If this is the case, we would call on the Government to launch a high-profile campaign to better explain the system.” Alex Bols, executive director of the 1994 Group

    OMG :wall::wall::wall::wall:

We're not dumb - you can explain it until the cows come home.

    I'll explain it.

"£9,000 pa IS TOO MUCH MONEY"

    Simples.

Or it might be that those who may have taken a gap year last year opted to start in 2011?

Some blame needs to land at the universities. After all, the fees voted in were to be capped at £6000, only rising to £9000 if you university wished to charge as such and showed plans on how they would help students more by charging the extra.
  • Hi
I am not sure if i am in the right place but here i go..
I started an Open university degree in October 2012 and i currently work full time. As i wanted to finish it in 3 years i opted for the 360 credits in 3 years which is equivalent to a full time course. I currently live at home with parents as i cannot afford to move out at the moment.
My sister is currently studying towards a degree but she is doing it full time, working part time and also living at home but she gets maintance living grants and student loans. Is there any grants that i would be eligible for as technically i am doing a full time course but also working full time? Also would it affect my sisters grants? I have heard somewhere only one per house hold but i am 27 years old and not dependant on my parents.
Any advice of where to go would be appreciated, thanks :-)

The "you only hate it because you don't understand it" line is doing my head in. We understand every last nuance and as a result we despise it from a well informed position.

My daughter started her degree just before the higher fees came in. She has one more year to go and then wants to do a masters.
What is the situation over the levels of fees for a masters. Will she continue to be at the lower level of fees or does it re-set.
    Thanks
