  • my son is wanting to do a degree at a private college mainly because its 2yrs full time, my question is about student loans - SFE orignially said they would fund the full£9,000 but now they are saying they will only pay £3,500 - every time he calls he gets a different response, he has to enrol in may and its causing us undue stress and concern - we asked for a call from a manager but this was never forthcoming - any suggestions?

I believe you can get up to £6k for tuition fees at private uni's.

Student loan early repayment penalty proposal 'abandoned'
Plans to impose penalties on students in England who pay off university loans early are to be abandoned, ministers are expected to announce.

It should be noted there are "plans" and not confirmed until the bill is amended at the commons stages.

Yes, this is good news, assuming it's not all just rumours and lies.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.
  • Can anyone cast some light on my question regarding calculating the joint income of my wife and I when applying for a Student Grant for Autumn 2012. I have just read on the National Union of Studentss website that :-

All taxable sources of income should be included, but any source of income which is not regarded as taxable under the Income Tax Acts in the UK (or the equivalent legislation in any other EU country) is wholly ignored. This, therefore, excludes income from most scholarships, tax credits, and non-taxable benefits such as child benefit, housing benefit, most disability benefits and most payments of income support.

Would I be right in thinking that all income from both Cash and Share based Isas are therefore ignored as income?

Would I also be right in thinking that National Savings & Investments Index Linked 3 and 5 year bonds, which are tax free, are also exlcuded as income too?

I phoned them up about DS's Isa's and as Taiko has already said, they are not taken into account. Not sure about the NSI Bonds though.
  • HMRC have confirmed that NS&I Index Linked Bonds do not contribute to calculation of income when applying for Student loans!

Living cost loans are available to contribute towards the cost of accommodation, food and travel.
What you’ll receive will depend on your personal circumstances. The maximum amounts for 2013/14 are:

Maximum loan - for new students and continuing students who started courses since Sept 2012

    You live at home £4,375
You live away from home and study outside London £5,500

You live away from home and study in London £7,675

This is a freezing of the maintenance loan in the 2nd year of uni for students starting in 2012 ( it's not rising in line with inflation)
