short guarantee with RAC

Options
My car broke down 9 months ago, July 2010. The RAC came and I paid £80.95 to have a new coil pack and fitting with 1 year guarantee.

Two months ago it failed again. RAC replaced and said that as I had not paid for the replacement I would only have the residue of the original guarantee. The Citroen had it's original ignition coil pack before it failed and was changed by the RAC.
There must have been something radically wrong with the part to fail so quickly. I think I should have a years guarantee as it is a new replacement part. RAC have refused stating reason above.
The RAC said it was a Peugeot part that was the same as Citroen.
If it fails again, can I claim from the manufacturer please?

Who did you pay the £80.95 to?
Did that cover the cost of the part, or just the labour?

What sort of arrangement have you got with the RAC?
    Warranty? Breakdown cover?

All those things will help us to understand what is going on.

Generally, if a product fails during a guarantee period, and is replaced, then the guarantee of the original item continues until it runs out. The clock does not start counting when the thing is replaced.
For example, if I have a one year guarantee on (say) a television and it breaks down and is replaced with a new one after eleven months, there is still only one month left on the guarantee.

No, the manufacturer does the same when they replace parts under warranty - they only cover it until the end of the warranty period - its the same on new cars.

You could claim the part is not fit for purpose, but the behaviour over the warranty is correct.

Thanks very much for quick replies.

Paid cost of replacement and labour to the RAC, [Good value as my garage wanted to charge £129.50].

I have breakdown cover with them also.

Very well I'll accept your answers.
However if it breaks down again can I say " not fit for purpose" to the manufacturer? In this case Peugeot.

No, sorry, that's not right either. :D

As you didn't buy directly from Peugeot, you have no statutory claim on them, and we have already explored warranty/guarantee.

You would however, have a claim against whoever sold the thing to you.

    Thanks again for replies.

    1]. Ignitin coil pack.

2]. I bought the original item from RAC for £80.95.
The replacement was free under their guarantee.

I think I will close thread now.

    Thanks for comments and information.
