Surveyors and Specialist Surveyors

Hi All!

We're looking to buy an old detached, Victorian house. The seller has inherited it from someone and I think the property hasn't been lived in fr at least a year or two.

As the seller have no knowledge about the house they can't advise us about any repairs (if any) or treatments (if any) that may have been done to the house.

The house shows sign of foundation movement as well as damp rising up the walls in most of the rooms. We already have a basic structural report on the building which doesn't really give any answers.

I am looking for advice on reliable specialist surveyors in the Cambridge area who can possibly undertake the whole business of looking in to the foundation and the damp issues to advise us of the cause and potential repair costs.

Can anybody advise of such? And also, what kind of survey costs should we be expecting?

Kind Thanks,

Get a structural engineer for the movement.

Have a look here for specialist surveyors for things like timber and damp etc. Avoid contractors who will quote for work they carry out. An independent surveyor might not find as much work because he isn't going to benefit from doing it.

Use the drop-downs for independent surveyor, problem and location. Ask on here for comments from members who may have used the firms before.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm having a look at the link right now. I have been recommended or rather a surveyor I called mentioned APP for damp issues and was wondering if anyone could give any comments and/or feedback about them.

The call out is supposed to 55 pounds (inc. the report) which isn't bad at all (I think??)
  • Hi. Did you use Anglia Property Preservation (APP) in the end. Found them through Google and was impressed with the fact they don't earn commission.

Interested in your experience and whether they put you in touch with a reputable contractor to do the work?

We've got a slight damp problem, hopefully not too serious, so keen to nip it in the bud before it gets worse. APP are fairly local to us.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

    Hi!

No, we didn't use them. The whole sale fell through in the end :-/

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
