Morgage Company statement charges...legal/unfair?

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I have searched the threads and can't find another topic which matches so here goes...forgive me if I'm wrong please!
We have a couple of rental properties which are mortaged with Mortgage Express.
I am ruthless when it comes to property admin and filing but am unable to recall having received this tax year's mortgage summary statements....Mortgage Express say they want £25 to copy each statement for me (which I need for my Tax return)
1. I believe I have not received the statements for 2005/2006
2. They cannot prove I did or didn't. They are just sent through the normal postal system They cannot prove they sent it....it would, of course, be in their interest not to! because I would thus HAVE to pay for it!
3. It cannot possibly cost £25 to photocopy each of the statements.

I have read the reclaiming Bank Charges articles and unfair charge reclaim boards, but the threads appear to discuss charges that the banks have ALREADY taken from someone's bank account and thus they have to be reclaimed.....
What can I do to get a copy of the statements for a reasonable price????
The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself. (Oscar Wilde);)

  • One solution is to ask them for "Data Subject Access" which means they have 40 days to supply you with a copy of all documentation they have relating to you including statements). This will cost you no more than £10 but will cost them much more than £10 to provide.

In fact, if you offer them £5 for the statements and threaten to ask for access to your data under the Data Protection Act if they don't agree, they should bite your hand off if they've half an ounce of intelligence.

    Good luck!
