Virus appears to have wiped laptop

Hi all
Im hoping someone can give me some advice. My son has opened a link today from a 'mate' and it seems to have unleashed a virus onto his laptop.

This virus looks like it has wiped his hard drive and now comes up blank or empty when I try to see any of the programs or files installed.

I am using avast antivirus and a scan of the laptop comes back with no virus found. There are still files showing in his recycle bin so I dont know if it really has wiped it because it seems to have happened instantly, or if it just appears to have hidden everything.

Any advice on how to progress with this would be much appreciated before I ground him indefinately- please.

Don't panic - the virus has probably set all your folders/files to hidden.

One of the resident malware experts here should help you out shortly.

full scan with malwarebytes fix anything found before closing, post a hijackthis log

run rkill to terminate the virus if it stops you from running malwarebytes, and unhide to get your files back.

Yes don't panic, as Toxteth said and you suspected it'll just have set his files to hidden. Please ignore any well meaning tech who starts scaring you about data recovery, as there is usually one of them in each thread like this.

First step: download Malwarebytes, install it, update it, and run a QUICK scan (Full scan will take ages). Post a log if you can.
    http://malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

You may have to start the computer in 'safe mode with networking' (restart, keep hitting F8 until you get the option)

If you have trouble running it, there are other steps we can take to get it running. Just let us know; some of those steps will be in the link posted above this one.

(if you want to confirm that all the files are still there, then just set the folder options to Show Hidden Files)

If he can still start Windows, its not wiped the drive but as other said, has set all the files to hidden. If you open Windows Explorer and go to Tools, Folder Options, View and make sure the "show hidden files" option is selected you'll find they magically re-appear.

OK - I ran quick scan with mbam and it found and fixed 4 objects - trojans. restarted the lappie and in start-allprograms there are only about 10 programs showing?

Ive included a hijack this log i did before the mbam. I'm now running a full scan to see if it can find any more.

You'll need to run unhide.exe now:
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

    Remove this startup:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [UjwpqfVIXBAeRvl] C:\ProgramData\UjwpqfVIXBAeRvl.exe
    (tick and fix in hijackthis)

Run TDSSkiller and aswMBR to make sure it didn't give you a common rootkit:
