I am thinking of asking for tax reliefs on the subscription I pay to my professional body (£80), after having read http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/n6w/index/life/tax/tax_reliefs_excluding_self-employed_people.htm#reliefsforemployees:
"[…] fees and subscriptions to professional bodies which are either necessary for you to carry out your work or relevant to your job, and which are not paid by the employer"
Would that be feasible?
Furthermore, I work in Research and buy books out of my pockets which are connected and help me in my job. Can I ask for tax reliefs on that?
thanks,
MR

Nobody on this? Nobody's done it before?

The Inland Revenue website link shown below gives the basic requirements for tax relief to be given and a list of the approved professional bodies.
http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/list3/list3.htm
As long as the professional body is approved and it is relevant/required for your employment, the subscriptions are allowable for tax relief.
As for books etc., you can probably forget any relief unless you are required under your contract of employment to personally buy the publications.0 -
Thanks for your response, exactly what I needed.
I paid too uch tax for the 2003-2004 tax year, and not just because of the above mentioned relief.
How do I claim for tax repayments, including (but not limited to) tax reliefs I am due for the 2003-2004 tax year?
I would have thought I had to use this form from the IR website:
http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/forms/r40.pdf
But I don't find any reference to tax reliefs. Section 8 does not make any references to tax reliefs (see notes http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/forms/r40notes.pdf ). Maybe section 15, "Additional Information"? Not sure.
Is this the correct form?
How about tax reliefs for 2004-2005?
Please note I am a PAYE and according to http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/sa/guidelines.htm I should not have to file a Self Assessment Tax Return.

MR, I claim two professional exemptions, the CIPD, and the Assoc of University Administrators.
For the current (and future - they roll automatically) years you can just ring your local tax office and confirm they details, you will need the amount of that years subscriptions. For previous tax years you need to write with details.0
