new kitten in 2 cat family

we have two cats (sisters) from kittens now 6 years old. we want to get a new kitten, and are torn between a real cutie who is a male, and another real cutie who is female.

can the panel advise on any likely challenges if we go one way or the other. i think the tom would be too robust but my OH thinks he may get too bossy.

we would plan to have either choice done as soon as permitted so not worried about hormones (but may not be right to not be worried)

comments? we have to decide by the weekend or the choice may be made for us

I have two toms and a girl and it is my girl that rules the roost. My toms, have been neutered, are nothing more than soft balls of fluff. It is embarrasing as to how soft they are!

In my experience boys are a lot softer than girls, more laid back and more accepting of other cats :)

My cats range from 12 yrs down to 6 yrs, eldest boy, next girl, next girl, lastly brother and sister.
To be honest the bossiest is the youngest female, the rest are very tolerable of each other.
I'd say go with your heart, when i have gone to choose then i pick one then thats it :)

If they are both cuties .....go for the naughty adventurous one always so much more FUN.
  • I'm going to echo that my boys have been much more laid back than the girls.

When I lost my old boy and was looking for another, I thought a girl would be best as the boy I had left was the dominant one (but soft as muck) and thought another male would cause problems.

However, she's the fiesty one - always picking fights, she's a tortie too (apparently they are a bit bossy!).

She's my 1st girl, having always had boys before and, oh my, she does stick up for herself.

If you've 2 girls already, I'd probably lean towards the boy too.

    Good luck!

I would agree with most people on here and go for the boy. Female cats even when neutered can be very territorial and I have known a couple of people who have rehomed female cats alongside other females and the fighting was so bad they had to get them rehomed again :(

Male cats are generally much more easy going and better natured, Ive had boy cats and they have been much more gentle (less intelligent ;)) than the female cats some of my friends and family have had.

    I have a 15yo girl and boy, a 3yo girl, two 1yo boys and a 1yo girl.

The 15yo girl rules the front garden and porch.
    The 3yo girl rules upstairs
15yo boy can't be @rsed to rule anywhere
The 1yo girl follows either her black and white brother or her mum around
One of the 1yo boys (b/W one^) is the soppiest cat ever and is BFF's with sis ^
The other 1yo is a bit of a loner who tries to rule the scratching post, but fails cos it's too much trouble.

My boys are definitley the easiest going, if there's any spitting it's one of the girls because one of the others looked at her a bit funny or went near the dog's bed (which they all hop in and out of at various times).

We were advised by an animal shelter to home a male with female cats - I'm not sure why. I think that a sort of dominance/hierarchy situation is more likely to occur with all females but maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong?

    Hi,
We've never had a male cat, used to have 3 girls acquired on various stages - and they never got on! So maybe try a male?
