Seems like a great deal to me
  • I'm really really tempted. My 5 year old Tosh has still got a couple of Gigs left on the hard drive but a couple of the keys are starting to play up and I'm thinking that "dementia" is starting to set in.
I'm not in one of the favoured regions however (W. Mids.) so it would mean a trip, mid Wales and Gloucester has been mentioned on here. I reckon that they are only going to have a couple per store (they only had 4 satnavs at my local store 2 years ago) so it will mean camping out on the car park at 7 to be first in the queue.

the processor is pretty damn good, i had a dual 1.8ghz xeon server blow up so i bought a similar cpu as a quick fix and it was 50% faster, and thats on multithreaded apps like code compiling.

its a native 64bit part with speedstepping, good cache, low memory latancy and high bandwith. it will be close in power consumtion to intel parts. much faster than say a 3ghz P4, slightly faster than a pentium M but slower than a core duo and there is the problem , for similar cash you could probably get a dual core cpu which is faster clock for clock as well.

theres also the issue of ddr laptop ram is rare now with most people moving on to ddr2 and you will likely need two 1gig sticks if you want to move up to 2gigs and throw away you old ram.

and finally the integrated graphics which totally blow, from personal experiance you are beter with a seperate 10 year old 4meg graphics card than a chipset which acceses system ram though battery life may be better.

frankly if you are looking to buy a laptop as a desktop replacement then a 17" screen is great, ive got one and havent turned my 19" monitor in months. if you have any interest in gameing or upgrading for future stuff then i would avoid this one as it isnt that great a deal, it wouldnt run full areo in window VISTA for example.

Do you have any alternative laptops you would recommended around this price and spec please? if this one fails in certain areas.

if i was buying one right now i would get this, its still an amd64 !!1} but has ddr2 so you can upgrade the memory without much hassle.

the graphics chipset x1100 are x300 gpus (not sure but the x1000 series also tend to support avivo) which should play some games though doom3 will be out and acer have a pretty good rep.

note it is a 15.4 inch widescreen but hay its all swings and roundabouts between price, performance, portability and battery life.

the fact they had 500 come in stock a couple of days ago and its down to 122 already does say something.

!!1} like thats a bad, core duos are better but not really worth the extra the laptops command
