How much to switch from Oil to Gas

Hi

Can anyone give me an estimate of what they think it would cost to get changed over to gas? This would be for a mid terrace 2 bedroom house in North Belfast, removal of the old heating tank and water tank in attic, removal of the oil tank out the back, and all aspects of installation. Also installation of power shower over bath (not a stand alone shower unit).

Would I also have to go straight away with phoenix or could I choose Firmus?

Would be looking to get this done before winter again!

Thanks in advance

We had a guy from phoenix out last night, quoting for conversion from oil to gas for a 3 bedroom semi. He initially priced us for removing the hot water tank and loft tanks but we don't have them start with. IIRC he started at 1800 which may have included thermostatic valves on the radiators if we didn't have them already & a timer which we already have. Quoted us 14-1500 eventually as ours wouldd be a lot more straight forward.
Colleague in work has just had her's done including the shower and it came in at 2100.
Apparently it's free at the moment to get the gas connected up to a meter (normally 750) on your house and you've 6 months after that to get the rest installed.
According to the bumph he left you they will initially connect you to phoenix as a default but you can get it changed to firmus as soon as it's connected.

Phoniex rep called at our shop in early April and the installation was to be done within 4 weeks - we are still waiting!

We are just looking gas for cooking so price not really relevant here, but so slow!
DJWW - cos we won't let it!

We had ours installed last July. It cost almost £2,000 and was worth every penny. The old boiler, oil tank, hotpress tank and loft tank were removed, the system flushed, 2 new radiators installed (the others had been done previously), thermostats put onto all radiators, replacement shower fitted and a condensor boiler installed - the best part - all done in a single day!
We can now drink the water in the bathroom as it comes from the mains and we don't have to wait on the immersion heater or oil to heat the water.
We received full instructions from the installer who was appointed by Phoenix and I would recommend him to my best friend, he was that good! I would also add that the area in the garage was left tidier than he found it - and every little bit of rubbish was cleared away too.
Hope your experience is as positive as mine!

Any chance you could post the guy who did your installation Fred.Ed. Thinking of having it done and been quoted 2500 + VAT plus another £300 for a power flush, seems very dear as Phoenix told me I should be looking at paying approx £2500 for everything AND they've a Scrappage deal on old boilers at the moment which is worth £400. Which should bring cost down to £2100 (plus VAT).

Vido, I've sent you a PM with some details.
    best wishes.
  • Is it possible to switch from oil to gas then get a wood burner with a back burner? Or would that be costly and inefficient in terms of price etc?

    Hi,

I am considering switching from oil to gas but I'm wondering is the investment worth it if I don't plan to be in my house for too much longer? I live in a 2 bedroom terrace house in East Belfast and at the minute I pay £60 per month on a payment plan to Maxol Direct for my oil which I then get topped up twice a year.

Does anyone have a rough figure of how much I might expect to pay per month for gas? It's just myself and my partner living in the house and we wouldn't be that bothered about putting the heating on all the time.

I would say I will probably stay here for another couple of years then I might sell or rent my house out. Do you think that having gas heating adds to the value of your house at all? With the oil tank taken away I would also plan on having a big patio in the back yard which I suppose might add some value too?! My partner thinks its a waste of money if I'm not planning on living here for a long time but would like to know everyones thoughts.

    Thanks

  • I have asked Fred.Ed and Vido to send me these details but so far I have had no response.
Can anyone else recommend a good installer for gas?

    Thanks
