Would a downstairs bathroom be a no deal for you?

  • My first house had similar layout to the one you described, my kids were 10 and 7 when we moved in and there was no issue for me or us while living there. The problem for me came when it came to selling I had several people look disgusted when they saw the bathroom was downstairs...erm well it was on the sales information! I also had a buyer offer then pull out 4 weeks down the line as his wife changed her mind about the downstairs bathroom.

If you love the house and the price is good then hopefully someone will feel the same when you come to sell (I did eventually!) but bear in mind you will have less people through the door when it comes to selling as it will definitely rule a good percentage of buyers out.

I was a lodger in a house with a downstairs bathroom. I just remember that it was a long way to run if you'd had a skin full and you needed to be sick in the night (I was young once).
Did you never learn to take a bucket to bed for such a purpose?

I agree with the person who said that it depends on the area. Some areas have the same sort of terraced housing in every street all with downstairs bathrooms added on the back some time ago. Not a deal breaker if the price and area is right. But if it were one house different from the rest then it would be harder to sell.

I wouldn't consider a house with solely a downstairs bathroom. Wouldn't want to traipse through a house to have a bath or a shower - or to spend a penny in the middle of the night after a few pints of ale - usually at least 2 occasions in my case! :D:beer:

I think losing a small 3rd bedroom is worth sacrificing for an upstairs bathroom. :)

To my dismay, it seems like even some new houses are being built with just downstairs bathrooms, like this house  (Looks like it was built specifically to rent out).

(Off topic - that small radiator in picture 4 looks like it will be working hard to heat up the open plan lounge/kitchen. :( )

It doesn't bother me if it was upstairs or downstairs.

The one we are in the process of buying has a downstairs toilet just off the kitchen (technically in the basement actually but it has an odd layout) and at first I thought about doing some rearranging and moving it around but after seeing it a few times I rather like it. I think the main thing that would put me off a downstairs bathroom was if it is overlooked as I wouldn't want to bathe with the curtains closed.

I viewed a house once where the only bathroom was attached to a bedroom so you had to go through the bedroom to get to it- now THAT was offputting!

My parents have one WC downstairs and 2 bathrooms upstairs which was pretty much perfect really for a large family with a constant influx of guests but as it is just the 2 of us a small but perfectly formed downstairs bathroom suits us just fine. It really just depends on what you want and how you are prepared to live.

The house we sold earlier this year had a downstairs toilet and bathroom. I lived there for 20 years and it didn't bother me. Most of the houses down our road were like that, although a lot had made an upstairs bedroom smaller and put the bathroom upstairs. I think it's something you get used to, we had a little 'un and it was no problem with him.

unless there was room for an extention to have a bathroom put upstairs then it would definatly be a deal breaker for me.

i really hate the layout of a downstairs bathroom, or when a bathroom has been put upstairs, but you have to travel through a bedroom to get to it. I know loads who love this layout, but for me nope, i would even go and look at a property with a layout as i've mentioned. i've no idea why i don't like this layout i simple don't.

Spot on. Ours all came down to location. We did stop several times and compare it to a house in perfect nick with a beautiful upstairs bathroom, but location was everything. In fairness we have a budget to get it how we want it, so we will. If we didn't have that it might have changed the outcome.
If I had a pound for every pound I'd lost, I'd be confused

It wouldn't have bothered me too much but my wife wouldn't even agree to look at a place with a downstairs bathroom.

We are in our "forever house", have been since 1993 and have a downstairs bathroom. Not a problem at all for us, even now we are getting older and have to make the ocassional trip in the middle of the night! :rotfl:
