The idea that there is one, definitive, "best bank" is an urban legend that I'm pretty sure First Direct invented.

You need to make a wish list of what you want, and start from there.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

You have just asked a "How long is a bit of string question". To obtain a meaningful and useful answer you need to be more specific about what your looking for by "best".

    For example

First Direct & Coop Banks always get at least 80% customer satisfaction in all the polls. However First Direct is a phone and internet bank ,while the Coop has few branches but can be run via the Post Office Counter service.

At the other end you have Santander. This has many branches, good interest rates. The customer service shall we say can do with some improvement, if the spate of complainers is anything to go by.

Not really a best bank each bank has its ups and downs,

    your choice really

TSB never had a problem with but they never gave me an overdraft or a credit card? (been with them for 10 yrs)

HSBC gave me an overdraft and a credit card (been with them for a month...)

see? just depends on the bank, all banks have there up's and downs.

but i see a lot of members here saying First Direct are very good. (even tho they are owned by HSBC)
    HSBC (Main A/C)
    Halifax Back up A/C
    Lloyds (Spending) A/C
    RBS Back up A/C
    Barclays Old A/C
    Nationwide Old A/C
