We didn't have this at school, but we did at college. We had to pay £20 at the start of the year if we could afford it, then we got £10 print credits in return to use over the year and the other £10 went into the college fund for improving facilities etc. We were told when starting second year that we didn't have to pay it if we didn't want to, and still got the £10 print credits anyway!

Not come across this at any of my childrens schools, although as long as it wasn't too much I would be prepared to pay.

Both schools my children have gone to ask for voluntary school fund. They do tell the parents what it is used for and in my daughters case it is spent on a planner for all the pupils and funds a big festival they have for all the children once a year. I would hate the festival and associated show and competitions to be scrapped because it has been a really enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all my three children. I have always paid the school fund for that reason, if it was wasted I would be more inclined to say no. The school my son now goes to also tells the parents what it is for and it is used for things like the library, planners and other extras. Both schools charge less per child if you have more than one child attending.

As far as I am aware neither of the schools pressure the children into bringing it in if the parents haven't paid it. The girls school my son goes to does send a reminder letter home to the parents though. I can remember when I was at school in the seventies, being regularly asked for the school fund in front of the rest of the class. My Mum had four of us to feed and clothe on just her wage. She could have well done without the pressure the school put her under to pay what was supposed to be a voluntary payment. I could have done without the embarrassment of being asked in front of all the class when I was going to bring it in.

My DD's school does this - they ask for £15 per year (it is a state grammar school). I have refused to pay because they insist on making them wear a specific colour uniform which costs ten times as much as a generic one - so I can't afford to give them any extras - the uniform cleaned me out!

My parents paid School Levy to our comprehensive 30+ years ago for me and my brothers and I paid School Fund for my sons' RC high for 7 years.
I was told it was what paid for extra curricular costs for those pupils who couldn't afford it.

I thought nearly all schools asked for money for the school fund. I'm surprised that some don't ask for anything tbh.

I have never paid into a school fund for my three and I think I would have heard if any of the grandkids had had to (their parents moan enough about the amount of days they have to take in 50ps or £sss). Perhaps its just not done here in South Wales?
  • My sons infant school ask for a donation of £15 per year from each child. It says its to help organise in school partys etc but we still have to donate food/money for these, along with a non uniform day every friday it seems :D:cool:

It does say on the letter if you cant pay please arrange a meeting with the headteacher to dicuss why :money:
