Two cars; Two policies; 1 no claims evidence?

Hi
Got a query.
My wife and I have been single car family for years but due to changing work etc I have had to buy a new car. Both cars are in my name and on taking out new car insurance for new car, the company (Privilege) have asked for evidence of No Claims Discount (I have over 15 years without a claim).
However on calling car insurance firm (First Direct) on current car, they said I can only have evidence of NCD on 1 car at a time and therefore they cannot give me this evidence. If I wanted it for new car, they would have to transfer it to new car policy and make old car policy without NCD.
Confused???????
Help anyone?

Thanks
Dafydd

I've had similar trouble with Direct Line. NCD should be based on the person who has accrued it, not on the vehicle, but forget it, that's how they play it. I went to Aviva for my second car and they were happy to mirror my NCD from my Direct Line policy, once DL had confirmed it to them.

Hi sorry you can only use NCD on one car/policy at a time. Presuming the second car is really for your wife probably cheapest if you insure in her name and see what intro NCD she could get

    Nothing confusing there.
NCD can only be used on one vehicle at a time.
Some insurers will insure a second car and give a discount if you insure both cars with them.

Have you asked first Direct for a quote on the new vehicle?

The other alternative is the multicar policies that some insurers offer.

If the NCB was built up on a single car then it can only be used on a single car.

However, lots of insurance companies will give a “discount” equivalent to the NCB if you get a second car, some will even do it if they don’t insure both cars.

Best suggestion is to hit the phones and/or go see a local broker. If you are going to have two cars from now on there is some logic in insuring one of them in wife’s name so she builds NCB.

    Thanks for the info
So currently my NCD is on a car worth about £7000 with insurance policy to be renewed this September. The new car is worth £11k so insurance quotes are higher. Both cars are registered to me as owner.

    Options?
    1. Take out car insurance for new car in my wife's name and build up NCD for her. But then her name is not registered as owner and small print of some companies stress that this has to be
    2. Can I wait until September and then transfer ownership of the £7k car to my wife and then re-insure under her name. But what happens to my NCD then on that car? Is it lost?
    3. Do nothing and have two cars insured and owned under my name?

Have phoned about but not getting much joy on good deals etc
    Thanks

It might sound trite but I wouldn’t have started from here……

The problem you have is that once Privilege realise you have no NCB on the second car they are going to be looking to increase your premium by a factor of three. I.e. a premium of £200 with max NCB will become £600+ with no NCB.

Going forward I’d ring privilege and see if they will mirror the NCB, I’d also try the insurer of your other car & someone above posted that Aviva did it for him so they might be worth a try. Other than that, a good local broker will, I suspect, sort it all out easily.

I guess the end result you want is new car insured by you with your max NCB and older car insured by OH with mirrored NCB to reflect her time as a claim free named driver on your policy.

Hi, a couple of years ago I got a second car and rang Admiral, they insured the new car and then when the 1st ran out started a policy on that so that they both ran out together. I dont pretend to know the discounts/ mirroring given but I got a 2.2dci and a 1.3 petrol insured for a total of £360. I went to them with a single proof NCD of 9 years and when I left them a year later I received 2 proofs of 10 years NCD.
I then went with 2 seperate companies for a year and this year have returned to Admiral with the same two cars for £355 in total.
You can get some idea of the cost by trying a 'multicar' quote online however to purchase you have to finish the transaction on the phone.
Also, don't forget cashback through Quidco/Topcashback.

    Hi,

I've run two cars for 12 years now, one a fun/hobby car and one a daily commute.

In the early days I had my full NCB on my fun car (it was worth quite a lot) and started up a new policy on the 2nd car (which was worth very little) with the help of a introductory 2 year bonus.

I ran two separate policies with two separate insurers for years until BOTH were at full NCB. This worked fine.

More recently I've seen more and more brokers/insurers offering to mirror the NCB on both cars. For a while I insured BOTH cars thought ONE broker but via TWO insurance companies - it was the broker that handled the mirroring. This was the norm for a while as one car was a performance vehicle, the other just a standard car so my broker chose the best insurer for each.

Now I'm still with a broker but BOTH cars are with the same insurer - the "sensible" car effectively reducing the premium on the "silly" car.

I'm the only person who drives these cars, though obviously only one at a time, and this has worked well for me. I know others who just have one (performance) car who pay car more than me just for the one vehicle, so this works well.

    Cheers,

    FlatFour.
