La Romantica bed

I've seen various threads on this forum relating to mattress recommendations and the La Romantica Venice mattress seems to come up quite often.

I've been to the manufacturers website and it doesn't appear that you can buy the mattress directly from them and none of their beds (base and mattress) seem to come with the same spec i.e memory foam both sides etc.

The other added complication is that I may need a non-standard size.

Could someone (maybe Tim Deegan) please let me know:

a) whether I'm right in saying you can't buy a mattress/base combination from La Romantica with a Venice matress.
b) if you can what is that model called.
c) who might stock these in the London area

Thanks

Chris

    Hello Chris Corbett

I'm afraid that the member Tim Deegan has the status PPR, which means posting privileges removed..........so he won't reply to your query.;)

If you read the Forum Rules, you'll see the following information to explain PPR:

forum_faqs_small_bubble.gifWhat's "PPR" under some people's usernames?
PPR (Posting Privileges Removed) is the term we use when we stop someone posting on the forum. The majority of banned forum users are spammers. It's important to note they can still read the site and forum (we never bar access to MoneySaving), however they cannot post. If they can't they may need to refresh their cache by clicking Control + F5.
If someone's been removed it could be for any of the following reasons:
    • Spamming
    • Advertising
    • Creating a "Clone" of someone else's username or impersonating another person to cause problems
    • Trolling (see What's a troll/alter ego? )
    • Resource Issues (consistently and inappropriately taking time away from the Forum Team's core work)
    Why are people banned (PPR'd)?
We don't remove people's posting privileges (PPR or ban) lightly. No one pays anything to use this site; and our first consideration must be towards protecting it from increased cost and legal challenge (although on mainstream issues of consumers rights we may choose to take battles on). Posting on MoneySavingExpert.com is a privilege not a right. We can refuse permission to post without giving a reason.

    Regards

    Nile

You should never be able to buy direct from the manufacturer unless your buying in mass bulk. That's what shops are for, you buy from them.

Why not just buy the mattress and stick it on any divan base? Nearly all divan bases are made the same and as long as it's in good condition will not effect any guarantee.

Non standard size shouldn't be a problem, + or - in 3 inches increments is normally the way that they do it.

As for who stocks it in London, sorry haven't a clue.

To add, a Venice mattress on a Divan Bed would be called A Venice Divan Set.

    Hi Chris

I bought one of the La Romantica mattresses (double sided memory foam) and I absolutely love it. It's really well made and supercomfortable. I have fibromyalgia and polymyalgia and if it's perfect for me, then it's going to be a brilliant buy for anyone :)
  • I have been reading through the mountain of threads reagrding this bed brand and Tim Deegan etc and am totally bewildered.Like the sound of the La Romatica Vienna which is the 2 sided latex king size but would like to know if anyone else has bought this bed.Want the natural latex over memory foam as i'm a bit paranoid about the chemicals and crap in memory foam.At over 700 quid its a lot of cash to spend on something i cant test and dont want the hassle of trying to return something if its no good as undoubtibly it would be a nightmare .Tried a few beds in Dreams and got the usual blurb from the sales rep. Would appreciate if anyone on here that has bought a Romantica bed give me their opinions good or bad

I got the Vienna after falling for the covert advertising of Tim Deegan (who now seems to have been completely discredited). I wish I hadn't now and am kicking myself hanging on to it thinking I'd "get used to it" rather than just sending it back when I could.

It may tick all the boxes for ideal specs (well, "ideal" according to Deegan or whatever alias he was using) but the fact is we just didn't find it particularly comfortable or well made. It wasn't a total shocker or anything but it was very disappointing for the price. Also worth bearing in mind that my wife and I both thought it was soft and unsupportive rather than the advertised medium rating.
  • I'm interested to know how he was discredited. There was a pretty obvious clash of interests considering he sold the items he recommended but what kind of businessman would he be if he didn't? I read all the pages of that mega thread and thought he was a pretty cool guy. I've got a La Romantica Madrid and it kicks serious bottom.

He has his own website for mattress advice now and his own forum, easy to find by googling his name.
I am in the belief of others, that his advice meant nothing really because he discredited all the beds he didn't sell.

    You answered your own question.

It was a farcical situation that went on far, far too long. He didn't just push/sell La Romantica, he actually developed a range for them. Which they admitted to me when I contacted them to find out ANYBODY else who stocked their products (all they would do is refer me to him!). So, he would come on here, slag off every other manufacturer that was mentioned and recommend a specification of mattress that was ONLY made by La Romantica. Needless to say, he made a big point of not directly recommending them in name as that would be an instant ban, but he didn't need to. Sure as eggs is eggs, someone else would pop up and name them for him. And bingo, folk like me duly parted with £100's...

You are happy with your mattress from him and I'm not, but that isn't even really relevant here. The point is that "help" like that is not what MSE forum is about - it's here for consumers not a tool for businessmen.
  • You have to understand the business though. Manufacturers quite often produce a named range for one client. That allows the client to advertise offering to beat any price for their merchandise, safe in the knowledge that no-one else sells their range !

I got the impression that TD had a real job and just did this on the side. When an order came in, he told the factory to make it up, thus carrying no inventory and saving the associated costs. Quite how that is a bad think I am not sure and in a couple of telephone conversations with TD, he came across as a decent bloke.

The direct comparison is the 4 years free credit crapola. This is basically £200 tat dressed up as £999 specials. What they are really selling you is an expensive APR loan, with a free bed. Wake up, there is no free credit, no free delivery and there is no pixie in the sky. It all has to be paid for somehow.

I understand that business model/scam but La Romantica are a small company sold by a very small number of retailers so it is definitely not applicable (or relevant) in this case.

And whether or not Tim Deegan's beds are rubbish, or whether or not he comes across as "decent bloke" on the phone, or just how bad his big chain rivals may be are all incidental to the issues here - which are purely about the way this forum should be used.
