Obviously AMEX won't work. Our Goldfish Mastercard worked ok.

I'd call my credit card provider to check before I went.

My Thomas cook credit card worked ok but they do charge a fee for using a credit card to pay with, which 2 years ago was 11%

You won't be able to use any MBNA issued cards such as Capital One, and American Express. They do accept Barclaycard and although they never used to accept Egg, as they have recently been taken over by Barclays this may have changed now.

Personally we just took sterling and changed as we needed in the hotel, every exchange in Cuba is regulated and you therefore get the same exchange rate no matter where you are (at least that is what we were told). I had my Northern Bank Credit Card with me that I used once to withdraw from the State-owned Bank.
On returning home I was called by the fraud dept of my bank who suspected it had been cloned and they stopped it immediately, issuing me with a new card. While Cuba is a very safe place to be, it is also a very poor country, so please exercise caution when using any cards, I was lucky that my bank was so vigilant...hth...
