Choosing an engagement ring......

Options
:j After 6 years together we're engaged :j

He proposed on a holiday in Rome last week and we are now looking for 'the ring'.

We have looked at Beaverbrooks and Ernest Jones to get an idea of rings etc and are looking at having one made on the internet (where you choose your diamond and ring shank seperately).

Are there any practicalities in choosing an engagement ring?

I like the radient diamond, similar to princess diamonds but more of an emerald shape, other than that I'm not sure with what to look at.

I've told him if he wants to pick the ring I would love whatever he chooses but he is keen to do it together.

We are going to sit down with a takeaway and open one of our bottles of champagne we were given and have a night of 'ring designing', I'm soooooo excited, just a bit overwhelmed.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

    Hey congratulations!!

No real advise about choosing a ring though... I just kind of knew mine as soon as I saw it.:T
  • First of all Congratulations!

I can understand why you OH wants to have your input, as you will have this ring for life :)

I have said this before in a previous thread so sorry if anyone has already read this but try ZS diamonds (google them), my fiance got mine from there (after recommendations from both of his older brothers) and they only supply top quality diamonds, you pick your diamond and your setting and can get it customised. My finace had mine customised so any wedding band can fit perfectly beside it. HTH! :)

My OH picked out mine from samara James (online). I got a bigger diamond that I would have thought and quality is excellent. They let you choose the 4c's, so you do get choice, but not soo much that you do not know what is going on!

We have looked at Samara James online and it's one that my OH's is keen to purchase from, he's read a few reviews on here regarding it and thinks it's pretty good.

Yes, it's amazing when you look at the quality of diamonds you can purchase online compared to in a shop. We found a 0.7c colour H, VS1 in beaverbrooks for £5,500, and the same diamond online is around £1280.

    So exciting :j

Well I love my ring and fianc! says he would recommend them. He managed to choose it all by himself so I can say (as he hates shopping) that it is an easy to use site! He actually ordered a slightly smaller diamond than I have, but they didn't have it in stock so called him and asked if he wanted one 10% bigger. He said that would be fine but didn't want to spend that much. He ended up bartering with them, so I got 10% bigger diamond for only 10% more. So very MSE! Very pleased when I found out how much he had saved over all!

  • 2 things i wish i had thought about before buying my engagement ring...this stuff might be obvious to the rest of you but i dont wear any other jewellery and never have done so i didnt know...

your wedding ring has to be the same metal, ie if you buy an 18ct white gold E/ring, then your wedding ring has to be 18ct white gold too or they rub each other away,

my E/ring, the band on it is quite thick, it stands out from my finger, but the wedding ring wont, so the W/ring is always going to look a little drowned (and i cant get a bigger W/ring as i only have a short ring space on my finger! *sigh*)

My Fiance also got my engagement ring from Samara James, he rang them up and got a really good deal, I got a beautifully cut diamond for much cheaper than the high street shops. We'll be getting our wedding rings from them as well. :T

I have just spoken to a lovely guy called Julian who has told us to draft some designs on the computer or a piece of paper and forward them to him for him to make up a computer generated 3d image of (hopefully) what I'm after. That seemed easier than me trying to tell him over the telephone what we were was hoping to 'create'.

It's good to know people would recommend them and are using them again.

Also very good to know there's some 'deals' to be had on what I think are already good prices.

I'd second (or third or fourth!) Samara James - we got my engagement ring from them and Julian is a really great help. Good luck with it!:)
