Liquid medication in hand luggage - deanting question.

I'm going to embark on holiday in a few weeks and was planning on taking hand luggage only in order to avoid unecessary extra costs.

My dilemma is that i will need to take my DD's liquid medication with me however the bottles they come in are 150ml sized.

Would i have any problems if i were to decant the medication into 100ml bottles and attempt to take them through security (one is bright orange so may attract some attention).

I'm also not planning on taking a doctors letter with me as this will cost £35  and i already have letters detailing DD's medical problems from her consultant.

So i guess my main question is do medications need to be in their original bottles to pass through security and do i need to have a doctors letter in order to take her medication through security checks?

    Hi,
Assuming that the medicine does not mind being decanted there should be no problems at all. Tip it into 100 ml bottles before passing through airport security. As soon as you pass through security you can then tip it back into the original container. (Empty bottles are fine even if they are bigger than 100ml). Take a small funnel with you.

They won't care what colour it is. Nail varnish can be very colourful whilst hydrogen peroxide (used in bombs) looks like water.

If it is prescription-only medicine you should carry something to justify you having it (pharmacist's label on the original container would be OK for most stuff ... but maybe not for narcotics).

    Have a good holiday

    From UK govt website:

Essential medicines, including inhalers and liquid dietary foodstuffs

You are allowed to carry essential medicines of more than 100ml in your hand baggage, but you will need:
    • prior approval from the airline and departure airport
    • supporting documentation from a relevant qualified medical professional (eg a letter from your doctor or prescription)
Remember to take only what you need for your journey. Extra supplies and larger containers of medicine can go in your hold baggage.

I would go to your local chemist and ask them to decant it - you'll need a sterile bottle anyway and the pharmacist can check the best way to decant it.

I'd take the standard size bottle as it will have the prescribing label on it along with a copy of the prescription and the consultants letter. Less hassle and less potential for problems

The pharmacist may also do a label for the smaller bottle.

Thank you all for your replies.

Would a 1 year old consultants letter suffice as proof that DD needs this medication?

The letter has her diagnosis and the medications she takes. I wasn't too sure if the letter needed to be a recent one.

I will also be sure to take DD's red book and all of her letters from the consultant (about 4 though only the first details her medications)

    Many thanks
