Advice about leaving shared house
Hello!!
I am moving out of a rented property at the end of this month.
The house is shared with two other people, who are both staying in the house for another year, with another girl moving in during july.
However, because there are three names on the Gas electricity, water (in & out) do i need to close the accounts? and get the other people to open new accounts??
I currently pay the Gas by Direct Debit, another Direct Debits the Electricity and the third person just gives us a third.
do i just close the account? or just call up tell them im moving out but the others are staying and get them to cancel my direct debit.
I just dont want them chasing me for money in a few years if the others get behind on bill repayments.
THANK YOU!!!

Hi pay_check - As I understand it from your post, you pay the Gas bill by D/D, another resident pays the Elec bill by D/D and the third resident just re-imburses the pair of you with cash.
Obviously you will be responsible for Utility payments till the day you leave - ON THAT DAY take meter readings for the Gas/Elec/Water and WRITE to all 3 providers expaining that you are moving out and that you have no responsibilty for the services after that date. Keep a copy of this letter safe for the next 6 years !
Your D/D arrangement for the Gas is a problem - If you just stop paying it the a/c will accrue debt and it's likely that the tariff prices will increase because of the loss of any D/D discount.
For this reason discuss this with your co-sharers - It would best if one of them put themselves forward for D/D billing on the gas with a letter that is included with yours to the Gas Co.0 -
In addition you should check meter readings today and make sure there are no arrears - particularly with the gas. Compare readings with latest bills and ensure any differences are collected now rather than after you leave.0

I see, so i should send a letter to the utility companies, with the meter readings taken on the day that i leave.
the letter should just give my name, the meter readings and the date i moved out right?
THanks guys!!0
