I paid in an old cheque

I did a search - sorry if my question is a repeat

Today I paid in a cheque for £25 only to find that it was out of date by about three weeks. I rang the issuer who it sending a new one.

My question is when the bank find out it will be stopped/not credited to my account. I assume they will write to tell me - will they charge me? Any idea how much? I am with Barclay's

Many thanks

It's down to the bank if they honour the cheque or not or also if the drawer has cancelled the cheque in enough time before it is processed.

I doubt the bank would charge you for paying in a cheque that subsequently bounces, the only concern would be if you withdrew funds on it before it cleared after the 6 working day cycle and then it bounced out your account taking you overdrawn.

Unless the cheque has been stopped it will be paid (if there are sufficent funds there) they won't bother looking at small cheques like this one.

It's an urban myth that cheques automatically go out of date after 6 months. It depends on the bank and the value - it's not worth rejecting one for a few pounds.

Don’t forget to ‘void’ and return the re-issues cheque (presuming you did receive it).
Otherwise inform the issuer, that you do not need the replacement any longer.
