Who says that a letting-agent has to belong to a professional body? As far as I know you or I could set up in business tomorrow with no training, no specialist knowledge, nothing.

There's a few that you can optionally belong to but there is one you have to register with but can't find which one it is

There is NO association that and agency HAS to belong to. ANYone can set up as an agent which is why there are so many agencies which know so little about landlord / tenant law.

However the most accepted optional body is ARLA. There are others.

    re...
the name of the association that a letting agent

... a shower of LAs? ... a corruption of LAs??... a cesspit of LAs???

Sadly this government decided regulation of LAs (& thus having to belong to a body & observe standards.. ) was to be dropped. Go figure, as the merkins say.

There are good LAs: I have one looking after one house..

OP - are you asking as a LL, a T or someone who wants to "work" as an LA?

Given that you don't need any qualifications, training or specific expertise to set up in business as an LA many folk prefer to avoid dealing with LAs at all and aim to deal direct with a self managing LL.

However, see also NALs , NAEA, TPOS, RICS......

Always worth checking whether your LA *is* actually a member
