Attempted fraudulent use of credit card

in Credit cards
I got an automated telephone call from the fraud department of Halifax Visa to ask if I had tried to top up an O2 mobile earlier that morning.
I had not so I was put through to an operator and was told the card had to be stopped and another one would be sent.
I was instructed to cut the Visa card up.
My monthly bill is already in the post,I don't use it often (bought a washing machine last month) but I do pay my bills off in one go every month.
I do this online through my bank but now because the card has been stopped I can no longer access this Visa account through my online bank account.
How can/should I pay off the bill of the visa card that has been destroyed/deleted?

You can call them up and pay by debit card over the 'phone.

Thanks for the reply.
Thankfully the transaction was only for £15 and I do not think it went through as they did not know my PIN.
The attempt was the early hours of the morning by someone a couple of hundred miles away.
It has shaken me up though to think someone could have got away with a larger transaction.0 -
the payment made to your old card number will find its way to your new card as the numbers will be linked in their system0

My question was how to pay the bill for the old card that has been cancelled so my usual online payment cannot be made.
I am not bothered about the new card which I wont recieve for another few days apparently.
But I think izools suggestion will work.0 -
I think you are very fortunate they contacted you.
A couple of years ago the same thing happened to me, but my bank didn't spot it. My debit card details had been copied and they started off trying their luck with 2 top-ups of £10 then £20 in same day. Then, when this went through 2 further transactions with carphone warehouse for £60 each. It was only when I checked the balance in a mini statement that I noticed the problem.
The fraud guys at the bank told me they often try with top up first to test the card...
you might have been stung for more in a couple of days:eek:
Glad you didn't:T0 -
You are right Lizzie.
I think they provide a good service and I am pleased they picked up the attempt.
Yes apparently topping up mobiles is the start of it and that is why they said the card must be destroyed and deleted. It ran out in September this year anyway.0 -
Exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Natwest rang to ask if I had bought a £15 02 topup. Of course I hadnt as my mobile is a company phone on Vodafone.
Natwest immediately blocked/cancelled my card and said they would send a new card. Also they would refund the £15. All I had to do was complete and return the fraud form they sent out.
A few years ago someone tried to get cash from an ATM using my CC. I have never used the card at an ATM.
I have been with Natwest over 35 years and have found them to be on the ball whenever I need it.
Unlike Abbey/Santander....:mad:0 -
Same here. At the weekend I received a call from LloydsTSB asking if I'd purchased an O2 £10 top up with my debit card. When I said I hadn't they cancelled the card and are sending me a new one.
The problem is that I always pay my Virgin credit card via the debit card, and it's due this week. I rang Virgin and they gave me their bank details so that I could set up a direct payment via online banking. In fact it turns out it's better because it's much faster, (2 hours to transfer over), so some silver lining.
Give Halifax a call.Pants0 -
Thanks for the replies.
It seems this is a common thing, I wonder why 02 is so popular with the scum trying to use our credit cards fraudulently?
My new card arrived in the post this morning, quicker than I expected.
It must have overtaken my bill that was already apparently in the post
It does not look like it needs activating like I expected it would.
It looks like all I need to do is add the new card online and I will be able to pay the old bill in the usual way.
I just hope nobody tried to rip this one off.0
