Hi all,

After some advice on my orchid... All but one of the flowers have died now so it will soon be time to cut it down... Could someone please give me some advice on where best to cut it in order to get more flowers?

Here it is:

I have lots of orchids and generally have half a dozen in flower at any one time... as regards to cutting off the bare stalks , unless they go brown and are obviously dead I leave them for a few weeks to see if they sprout new shoots, they can do this from anywhere on the stalk including the ends.. then if nothing comes I cut them right back to the bottom . They usually have a rest then start putting out new roots and a flower stalk . Yours looks like its had lots of off shoots already so may need a good feed and rest before it shoots again..

I agree with Tanith,It will flower again just cut the stem off close to the plant and feed with an orchid feed.
when it flowers again it may put out new side shoots like yours has, when it finishes flowering again you can try cutting the stem above a node and it may send out a new shoot.

    Thanks for the replies...

So are we saying I just leave it for a while as it is and see what happens then? And if nothin happens, cut the whole thing off close to the leaves? Apologies for my ignorance!

Yep thats what I'd do, also as regards watering don't just dribble a bit in now and then, I stand mine in a deep bowl of water (rain if poss) for 20 mins then let all the water drain out.. I do that every 2/3 weeks.. you'll see the roots swell and turn green as they soak up the water..

Cut back the stem that has flowered to the next bud scale. That bud will develop into a new flower shoot. When that dies cut back to the next one and...

You can keep it going for 10 months or so. looking at that plant you have a lot of bud scales to work with.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Hi RAS... All of those 'nobbly bits' are where the plant has already had a flower so would that still work?

place in an east facing room as I've found this help also be patient it can take up to a year! Also with cybiduim (yours is a phlonophis or moth orchid) sometimes leaving it outside up until the first frost can induce flowering
