Help! My Documents opens at Startup

HI techies, need a wee hand

When I boot up my PC, My Documents automatically opens after the Desktop icons appear. How do I get rid of this?

And also, I am running Avast! and every so often it tells me something like "found malicious software - rootkit" (or something). It advises me to delete, so I press ok, then it advises me to reboot and run an automatic system scan or something, which takes a long time. Not long after the problem seems to recur.

Any ideas on the above would be appreciated.

Ta!

So why post if you were just going to ignore the original advice given anyway?

Well, hope you manage to remove the rootkit anyway.

We get a lot of drive-by requests for help, my subscription list is full of them. I still never quite understand why people ask for help but then seemingly ignore the thread they've created, but remain active elsewhere on the forums. I was just curious why you were among those.

(Originally there was a post with some simple steps to take that might help with the rootkit problem you're having, but you're ultimately better off formatting and reinstalling, making sure you wipe the MBR)

I can almost see your point, but don't make asumptions without knowing the first thing about other factors which may have occurred in my life in the last 12 days. Sorting my PC happens to have come WELL down my list of priorites since then. We don't all spend all day glued to MSE, I just know that I have received useful and friendly advice on here before. I was unaware I was obligated to justify my subsequent actions or risk censure if I didn't give you a running commentary.

But thanks for the advice anyway. I'll get round to it in my own time thanks.

People volunteer their time & knowledge to help on these boards, but it's true that some of those who ask for help feel the same way as you do about having no obligation in return.

So what's the point of anyone replying to your question then?

Ok, I am not going to get into a pointless and petty argument but for the record, I asked the question, then something far more pressing and health related has occurred in my life in the itnerim. I had had a quick look at the responses but had not had the time or energy to put them into practice. Hence the lackof posting since.

In case you are interested, I am always courteous and grateful for any advice I receive on any of these forums (and, yes I have given it too without expecting anything in return) and I always make a point of thanking those who respond.

It just seems that posting a remark which could be construed as a pretty mean-spirited criticism on a free and friendly board withjout having any idea around peoples personal circumstances isn't exactly in the spirit of the site. No one forced you to respond, just like no-one forced me to act on your advice. And if it doesn't work, I won't be posting a complaint, for the very same reason.

But I have wasted enough time on this already so thanks for the advice.:D

If you Google Help! My Documents opens at Startup the first result is Microsoft KB 555294, which should solve your problem

or if that seems to complicated just open ccleaner and select the start up tab then disable it from the start up.
