Waiting lists for Allotments

Just had an interesting short article delivered to my inbox. Waiting lists for allotments in my area! I live in Rugeley, Staffordshire currently.

http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2011/06/06/demand-grows-for-plots-at-allotments/

I am glad now that I have found mine this year. Yes I am paying much more rental than a Council one (£100 per annum) but with that many people in front of me I think I would be waiting a good old amount of time.

120 people waiting for 31 sites.......... That's not many?!

At least not compared to my local sites where there are 30+ waiting for each site!
  • I've been told that at the current rate, I will be waiting 82 years on one site.

Fortunately, the one I want only has a 22 year waiting list. I'm currently borrowing someone elses, but they're going to want it back soon

Makes the 5 years i waited seem like a very short time indeed.
I'm surprised (with a 22 year list) they aren't forcing people into taking half plots.
Council probably would get more money that way as well.

The 82 year wait one i assume they bury the previous owner onsite? :)

I've got 93 on the waiting list for my site. It's about a 3 year wait at the moment.

It goes to show that the numbers on the list really don't mean anything without information about how many plots there are and thus the likely turnover.

There is also the point that although lots of people may be on the list, many will not want one when they get to the top - about 1/3 of the people on my list have moved, got a plot elsewhere, or different family priorities by that time.

The quick turnover is also helped by those who are very surprised at the work needed to keep an allotment looking like the pictures in the Sunday supplements! They don't last for long.

I contacted the allotment directly and not the council, Got a plot within 24 hours. Seems the council forget to pass details on.

anyone with more than one allotment should have to give back the extra sites and anyone not working their sites should also have to give it back and imo all sites should be half a plot to start with

Is there a standard size for an allotment or are they all different? Luckily I have my own back garden which isn't overly big but have managed to fit in 2 greenhouses and 17 deep beds 8' x 4'

That's the worst thing - they have. Apparently, there are only 3 plots left that can be made half plots.
