Got a call from with held number yesterday from some one claiming to be called dave from a company on behalf of virgin................wanting me to confirm my dob for security reasons before he would tell me why they were calling ............I said no I would not as he called me to start with and he was calling from with held number.............get impression working from a script and an overseas call centre given accent too as he seemed perplexed and then asked for security reasons my password to which I repeated no for same reasons..............he said very important call from virgin.............my answer fine as you cannot understand the need for me to protect MY SECURITY as you are calling from a with held number and if you are who claim to be you would be able to tell me these things I will call them my self......................I hung up.

I eventually found a human to speak to at virgin who confirmed the call and I have lodged a formal complaint given the number of scams it was somewhat silly to operate in the way a trickster would.

  • Thanks for the Warning Beth my girlfriend has just taken out a Virgin CC as they have a good BT offer at present.

She has been out twice now but they have called to chat to her using a withheld number.

    I will warn her.

Anyone calling from your bank/credit card etc can not even give you any details about yourself unless they can verify your id by asking you to confirm usually at least three details about yourself ie: date of birth, first line of your address etc. And usually if you have given a memorable word for verification. They have to do this to avoid discussing your private financial information with anyone else.

And many businesses have witheld numbers, especially when they are on internal lines and/or call centres.

If they phone me....a call that I didn't request....for security reasons I normally suggest that if its important....they should put it in writing....after all....if you give and address, DOB and memorable word you've defeated the object?....usually its just some sales mumbo jumbo....and like I say....if its important....put it in writing asking me to call you....otherwise don't waste my time....

We had a call from Tesco CC a few days back asking us to verify some spending on our account. I said I would call them back (to the number I found myself on the website or my credit card, not the number the caller gave me) and they were perfectly understaning about it all, in fact it was treated as quite normal behaviour! It turns out there had been a suspicious transaction on the card (only one for £10 thank goodness) but they had flagged it straight up, called us and once we had called them back, they cancelled the cards straight away.

If CC cold call you for any reason, they should be understanding if you ask to ring them back.

I can also see why they ask for details though - just because you answered the phone, and you might know you are the only Mr or Mrs so-and-so at that address, but they don't... You could be living with a harem, have left the baby-sitter in charge, etc etc.

I've had this with Virgin and other MBNA cards asking for personal details. They were calling for marketing purposes!
