hp photosmart problem,help needed

I have so many issues with my laptop but this latest is driving me mad.
My photographs stored in the hp photosmart 1.9 package can't be accessed.Every time I try to look at them I get a message "hp photosmart has encountered a problem & needs to close." That's all I get. I've tried uninstalling the software, running diagnostics & systen restore, all to no effect. Now for some reason my other storage system (fujifilm finepix, hardly ever works well hence my continued use of hp) has erased a file (more likely something to do with my 6 year old on a bbc photo download website, when the issue arose) which I hadn't yet backed up so I really need the Hp system to open.
Sorry if I'm not being too coherent,I am not very computer literate & never have time to get better.
I would be grateful to any kind person who has any idea what I've done & how I can make it better again.
Ta very much

A quick fix could be to download google picasa, its a very useful program for images and when run will search your computer for all your images and put them all in one place.
I personaly never like the programs issued with digi cameras etc.
oh by the way, picasa is free....
