Silly question about new lines

Hi all, I am about to move to a new place. The landlord tells me that the wiring for a line is there, but there is no phone service.
Do I need a costly installation and a 12 months contract with BT to get
service?
Can someone else provide me with service or it has to be BT. I reckon then, I am tied with them for a year.
I am quite new with all this!
Thanks

it depends whether it is a brand new place or not . if it is existing are they bt or cable sockets0

There are phone sockets, the wiring is there, but the line is not active now. I will need a new phone number.
Thanks!0 -
if the wiring is there you shouldn't need to pay anything. we had wiring, it didn't actually work cos it hadn't been in use for eight years, but they still reconnected us for free.
best thing to do is call BT and ask them to test it... nobody else can really know for sure.0 -
Thanks for the advice "circuit". So, if the wiring is OK can I just, for instance, call other company than BT and get service with them?0

IF it's been used before for a BT landline.circuit wrote:if the wiring is there you shouldn't need to pay anything.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
