Refund to closed account?

Options
Hi,

I had a refund for a laptop from Dell at the beginning of May paid into the card I bought the laptop on 11 months ago. This account was closed 9 months ago..

Dell have said they've successfully sent the refund and have sent me proof of payment. The bank account is closed however and I have since contacted them (Alliance and Leicester) who said that no way they have received the money as I have no active account.

I have £370 floating about where no one is claiming to have this money. I'm really confused as to where the money actually is?? Can Dell be correct in saying it's actually left? As the bank says it would bounce..

Thanks

Was this unexpected? ie you expected a repair or maybe thought a cheque would be sent. What do the Dell T&Cs say about refunds?

Raise a complaint with A&L (Santander), including the 'proof of postage'(!) from Dell, and ask them to look into it. They may find it's been placed in a suspense account and send you a cheque. Alternatively, if they did bounce it back to Dell then use the 'proof' A&L (Santander) give you in their response to chase Dell.

MRC, I had a similar experience with Barclays Bank, I opened a account with NS & I, using BB as an account, for withdrawal money, to be deposited. Several years later switched to LTSB. When I came to close NS&I account, they transferred what was left in account to BB. I forgot to inform NS&I i'd switch account. luckily I'd kept closing statement with Barclays, asked them to check if money from NS&I had been transferred to old account, it had, but the old account number was now in somebody else's name. After a certain amount of time, closed account numbers are re-allocated to new accounts. Luckily, and credit to Barclays I was re-embursed with my money. I know it was my fault for not informing NS&I for change of account, but bit suprised old account number after awhile, are allocated to new account holders. MRC, try asking if your old account number is in somebody else's name. Just an idea

    Thanks for the replies..

Called A&L and they said that they may have received the money but theres no way knowing where it currently is as will be in a holidng account. They said I need to speek to Dell again to get the payment pulled and they can refund by cheque or something else.

Not really that helpful really and it's impossible for Dell to play game too.

Just to update.. no progress still! :(

Dell still insist it has been paid. Tried to take further with Dell through complaints procedure but no one ever contacts me back, also emailed someone who issued proof of refund but they are still to get back after weeks.

Not sure where to take it from here as it's still missing and no one seems to want to help anymore

As far as I am aware Santander do not utilise "holding accounts", the money will simply have bounced back to Dell via the BACS system, sometimes it can take up to 10 days to rectify itself.

It's been 2 months. Dell claim that as far as they are concerned, they've paid and there's nothing that they can do.

I suspect they are lying/ fobbing you off.

I had a lady in work accidently make a £500 payment from her Lloyds account to a closed Santander account. The £500 returned to her Lloyds account after about a week.

Yeh, I can imagine it gets refunded after a few days like any other payment would do..
    ?
Does it matter it was refunded back to a card? I'm hoping card numbers don't get reused?
