Ages ago now someone asked about the value of cigarette cards. I've just found a specialist sale of them just in case anyone else was interested. These appear to be the ultra rare ones but just in case anyone has any stashed away at least they can take a note of the auctioneers details:

The books of them I have here still go unsold at a car boot though for pennies :(

EDIT: Just to add the auction also has autographs and memorabilia- but the autograph market is a hard market as there are more fakes now than real ones and is best left to the experts.

Thanx for this, my great grandfather had a rather large card collection and my mum has been trying to get a rough idea of value for a couple of years now. Ill pass the link on to her. :)

There is also Murray's who publish a cigaette card values book. Just checked their website http://www.murraycards.com/index.aspx and found that they are closing down.

The problem with 'values' books (and this applies to stamp collectors like Stanley Gibbons) is that they are often extremely unrealistic. At least with auctions you can see what is actually moving and spot a trend with which type retain their value and which do not.

One of my big lines is collectables and I can see for instance that Wedgwood Jasper ware pin trays are 'valued' at several pounds if you check collectors books, but in reality you can't give the things away. I see them on the various TV programmes all mentioning that they are a good item, but then go to a real auction where they are desperately trying to get rid of a job lot for a fiver with no success.

It is interesting though how quickly trends change and I love watching these internet auctions live on the web just to see trends. I also know someone who watches these auctions and sees what items go well at what auction then buys them at a different auciton and passes them to the other one to sell at a profit.

True, but at least the values guide shows you which sets are potentially valuable.

Cigarette cards have gone out of fashion, and most sets you will only get a fraction of their worth. However, if you've got a set of Taddy's clowns, that's a different matter ;)
