Old Tea Towels, Socks and Tops

Hi OS MSE'ers!!

In true OS style I want to reuse some bits and pieces and have run out of ideas...

I am about to change my tea towels as mine look really manky even though they're clean, after pairing up socks, I have soooo many odd one's it embarrassing, and I've put away DS's clothes that are too small for him and I've put aside the stained 'painting tops' to reuse

I'm already planning floor clothes from the tea towels and some car clothes from the tops, but I'm stumped and I really do have a lot to use...

I don't have drafts around the house to warrent a draft excluder....

Any what about all those socks? I don't have venitian [sp] blinds to use them on

Anyone got any suggestions for reuse for me?

  • could you use the socks as stuffing for cushions or soft toys?
  • Apparently you can put odd socks on the top of the ladder feet to stop the ladder marking the wall! I thought that was a great idea!

    Hi Shortie,

There are a couple of older threads with suggestions on what to do with odd socks:

As said above, socks on hand as dusters. Use on both hands, damp, and you do the dusting that much quicker. Ideal for cleaning venetian blinds, by the way.

If you really are overrun with them and have run out of inspiration [that was me 2 months ago] you could take them to the fabric bank. Ours locally makes them into new cloths. We also have the Bluebell Railway which takes all the unsold clothes etc from the small person's cubs jumble sale and uses them for oily rags.

Playgroups and schools might be able to use them for craft projects.

Socks can make great puppets and also rice bags (just pour some uncooked rice grains into a clean sock and tie up the end).

T shirts can be turned into cushion covers, (nice idea if it is one of yours childs favourites) just cut off the arms, cut a straight line below the neck and sew up leaving the bottom and stitching on either a zipper or some velcro. Stuff with a cheap inner pad or make one (using up the odd socks!;) ).

T-towels if they are gingham checked could be used to make up some shaker padded hearts for decoration. I have cut up some of mine for cleaning rags but I have seen somewhere an idea for making up a rag doll in a little fabric sleeping bag made from t-towels.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Oh help... looking at the old threads I'm now thinking of the wheat bags (but a rice variety) and pot pourri in DH's smellie shoes!

Maybe even MATH's suggestion on a posing pouch! :rotfl:

Righto... me thinks a 'use up the od socks' personal challenge is due, in prep for Chrimbo pressies next year.

Hmmm... now I'm also thinking of patchworking a long cushion from the tops and knickers so that when I become pregnant again, I have a cushion for bed ready and for free! I got Synthesis Pub... oh I can spelt it, but anyway it hurt and sleeping with a big cushion will help if I get it again

Thanks guys!! Any more ideas on the tea towels and tops front?

Any idea if the rice can be scented so that I can can repeat my shop bought lavendar scented one in rice and socks? :rotfl:
